My footage says its ProRess 422 (in the top left box of FCP) and I’ve let the timeline set the settings for me.

Therefore ‘reconnecting’ my files in my BACK UP project to my BACK UP footage media files. hope this makes sense 🙂

My footage is on my Seagate external hard drive.
On this Seagate hard drive I created a FCP 7 project and log and transferred my footage in, because rather than there being individual files to do a file/insert, on my memory card they are shown as one file called AVCHD.
I have a back up of this AVCHD file on my computer and also a back up of my FCP7 project.
If my hard drive were to break, and I had to open my back up on the desktop of my mac, my files would be offline. My question is whether I would easily be able to reconnect these files to the back up AVCHD file even though I used log and transfer to insert them in to my project. In the past, I have only reconnected files that I’ve inserted via File/insert.

My hard drive is a seagate 3TB which has 1.9TB still free. It’s plugged in to the electricity and then through a USB port in the back of the computer (think it is a USB 3 as well). I do have a lot of layers on the timeline (60-99) for about an hour in duration. I was thinking this may be the cause but my other projects are slow too. Is this a computer issue or hard drive issue?

Ok, so backing up my project on to another hard drive sorted – but what about the footage IN my project – this would surely be disconnected? And because I log and transferred it in would I be able to reconnect it in the usual way?

I didn’t mention that I have 99 layers on a lot of this sequence and it goes on for about 1 hour so I guess that is contributing to the slowness of the machine.. I am rendering it now and going to leave over night – it says 5 days to render! Lets hope not!

Hi Jerry – my project is being VERY slow and I only have one sequence, but the file is 70MB and I guess this is due to the amount I have on the time line – most areas are stacked 60 – 99 layers. Could you please tell me as to whether this is causing my machine to be slow (even on the sections of timeline where I don’t have layer upon layer)?

Oh, i’ve just seen that my computer actually has 4 USB 3 ports. So I haven’t figured out why its so slow then 🙁 I can’t think why else this would happen. Do you reckon if I used a different computer with my hard drive, it would be quicker?

I’ve tried looking in the USB device tree for my computer and my hard drive isn’t there so I’m not sure as to whether my hard drive is connected to a USB 3 or 2?

In order for a FCP 7 project to run smoothly, I’ve heard that 100MB is max really, and that a project over that can crash and is likely to run really really slowly. Is this the case? My 70MB project is very slow and I wonder if i am maxing it out.. thanks??
