  • Alright, I think I have it nailed down – 2009 2.93 Nehalem Octo, they seem tough to find though, hoping to find one for around $2k…

  • After looking at some used towers – can someone chime in on where the biggest render bump comes from or really, where a used sweetspot might be? It seems like processor speed is an important factor and based on bare feats, 8 cores seem to do better than 4 and obviously it needs to be 64 bit and not 32… but what about chip architecture? Nahalem, I cant seem to lock down what would be a substantial bump from my 06 3 ghz mac pro dual proc dual core but where the returns diminish. Thoughts? Thanks guys!

  • Thanks guys,

I actually started on Avid and cut several broadcast shows years and years back (never a power user but was able to deliver on deadlines) but then made the switch and moved out to LA and since have been a FCP faithful. I don’t plan to even delve into FCPX as every post house is seeming like they’re going to shun it and if I’m going to need to learn new keyboard shortcuts all over, file structure and build new memory muscle, I’ll put my time towards Avid since it’s so well established and committed to keeping things the same (for better and worse)… once I gradually move away from FCP7.

The need is more that lately, I’ve had tons of exports when deadlines approach and I always must let my machine export overnight which is getting old. I also must plan carefully when deadlines are extremely tight by making sure everything has been completely rendered before an export. It’s just gotten to be a bit silly when the slow down is on my end and my clients are paying well.

It sounds like I need to find a used 2010 Mac Pro for a decent price and then wait it out with that machine. I gather, the silliest thing to do would be purchase a “new” Mac Pro at full price when a used 2010 will get me the same speed or try to make a hackintosh work perfectly when I make my living editing – it seems like the reliability would be a constant issue, or worry.

Or… perhaps it was Steve Jobs looking at where their profit margins come from – it aint selling FCP or even Mac Pros. If FCP was anything to them, it was like an Audi R8 – you don’t build them to make a profit, you build them to increase your brand’s appeal – in Apple’s case, it was to gain the support of professionals, to eventually have Walter Murch write a book about Final Cut Pro (I own all of his books). Anyways, I digress. This was what led me to hold on to my 06′ (that’s the longest I’ve ever owned a computer) Mac Pro – I essentially still have overkill for what the program is even capable of 5 years later, unless I’ve missed something which was what I was trying to figure out with this post. It sounds like that other than faster render / export times, my 06′ mac pro, the way it’s configured now (other than adding an AJA card etc.), is still pretty much maximizing my FCP experience?

Michael – RT settings are Unlimited, dynamic picture quality, full frame rate.

David – thanks for this list. Yes, I agree – the matte needs tossing, alas I’m on an insanely tight time table for editing and don’t have the time to remove it all. I was having panic attacks all day looking at the myriad of different frame sizes and weird mattes used. I believe it was an Avid editor trying to just make it all work along with assistants that never really chose a consistent frame size to convert their RED files to.

My system cuts 2k ProRes 422 fine when the files are actually 2k ProRes and the timeline is setup for 2k resolution. 4k ProRes, it starts to bog but who cuts at 4k anyways. I don’t mean to sound like I’m in denial, I guess it seems like FCP7 can’t take advantage of multiple cores or even a fraction of my 12 gigs of ram so that’s why I was having a hard time justifying a system upgrade. If I’m cutting a feature, I can let cuts render out overnight. Otherwise, short form doesn’t take too long. If FCPX had just been FCP8 that was rewritten from the ground up to take advantage of new system architecture, I’d be all over one of the new Mac Pros hopefully about to be released but as it stands, I’m still having a hard time finding a reason to upgrade my Mac Pro other than quicker export / render times. Am I missing something re: RT performance that a new system can bring (serious question)?

Just to clarify – I meant that I changed my timeline settings to 2k so my 2k resolution prores footage stays native to the timeline rather than FCP having to convert 2k to 1080 on the fly. I’m sure it’s a minimal conversion but every little bit helps. Also, the film has a 2.35 matte on every single shot so there’s additional rendering on every shot to begin with…

Spoke with Keith Hatounian over the phone regarding the issue – his suggestion was to try opening it in Soundtrack Pro, see if the issue translated there and if not, export an AAF from Soundtrack – otherwise he was taking me through the steps of how to lower the version of my project back to FCP 6 to do it there. Soundtrack Pro opened the project fine WITHOUT any issue however when the AAF was imported into ProTools, it crashed the system every time (the AAF’s from Soundtrack aren’t self contained and there’s no options to make them that way so it was a reference file and 6,200 audio clips). However, I tried an AAF from Automatic duck which I set to be self contained and eureka, it opened properly in FCP. Thank god, but I still wish I knew what the issue is, troubling that I don’t know if it’s a bug or just a freak occurrence…

Yep, I tried exporting on the sound designers FCP 7.0.1 from a consolidated project file using a firewire drive with the media (the project was already consolidated onto an external drive for the online). I got the exact same OMF as I had the first time from my own machine, exact same errors…

Just got back from running the new Automatic Duck OMF’s over to the sound designer and composer… SAME THING! I’m beginning to think this is a big bug in 7.0.1… my last ditch effort is to try an AAF from Automatic Duck…
