The media itself can live on a NAS. You just have to use externally managed media. This was always true with FCP X, but now it’s easier to import directly to a location on your NAS. Your library file has to be on a SAN or in a sparse bundle.

I haven’t upgraded yet to 10.1. But I’m going to store media in folders on the NAS. Then store libraries within a sparse bundle also on the NAS.

I’m not crazy about sparse bundles (they are difficult to backup), but it will do the job for now.

I haven’t upgraded to 10.1 yet. And yes it happened before I moved anything. I’m not completely sure if I closed FCP X when I left for the weekend. When I came back on Monday it was on the log-on screen. So something may have happened to the computer where it rebooted and corrupted the project file. But what’s weird is every single copy got corrupted. I thought the backup was supposed to prevent that.

I had a wrong setting on Pro Versioner that I should not have had, so I was essentially left with the one backup from Pro Versioner that was also corrupted.

Oh well. The edit was better the second time around. 🙂

When I tried to open the project. It would just get stuck on the screen with the FCP X splash logo saying “Opening Project…” No beach balls, it just wouldn’t do anything. I could go to the FCP X menu and click Quit. However, once I did that it would screw up my window layout file, so I’d have to go delete that. Also weirdly if I mounted the volume while FCP X was open it would crash the program.

  • Have they added ease in-ease out to position, rotation & scale parameters? Not only the FCP X ones but any you might have in a Motion Template?

Well the window problem got solved, but the corrupted project file was unrecoverable. The backup was corrupted. The automated backups with Pro Versioner were corrupted. I don’t know what went wrong, but something went seriously awry. Luckily it was only a 4 or 5 hour edit so I should be able to recover in about 3 hrs. But I wasted most of yesterday trying to figure it out.

That did it! Trashing the layout. Thanks.

Oh man! None of these work. I had tried both menu and keyboard shortcuts. Tried reinstalling FCP X 10.0.9 on my iMac that I have Mountain Lion on (to force it to install 10.0.9) No love. Still the same problem. My event library is just gone. Trying to restore to a Time Machine backup now. Hopefully that does it. I’m about at my whit’s end.

Then on to dealing with corrupted project file. Not getting anything done today!

Yeah. I sort of understand Apple’s logic here, but I think it’s the wrong logic. The way Apple thinks of it is – P tool is the tool that creates gap clips, therefore it should be the P tool that does this operation.

To me the more logical way to think about it is – The P tool moves clips forward or backward in the timeline. The T tool trims clips in their existing location. Therefore it should be the T tool that does this operation. But what do I know.

Thanks guys. I guess I didn’t think of that. It’s just weird that FCP X understands it needs a gap clip when trimming video backward, but doesn’t understand it when trimming an audio clip forward or moving a J clip into the secondary. Seems like an oversight and an easy fix.

The way I work with music generally is I put it in a secondary storyline. I find it much better than the traditional way of editing music with FCP 7 because when you slide or adjust timing slightly it doesn’t screw up your video track. And if your video is just a second short to make it to a music edit it’s easy to add time to the video without altering your audio edits.

The one drawback is that an edit towards the beginning of a secondary storyline will change timing later on. In cases, where I want an exact section of music at an exact point, I’ll make a second secondary storyline so it stays locked to the video at that point.

With magnetic or non-magnetic there is always problem solving that goes on to get music to work with the edits whenever you make a change. I’d come down on the side of saying that magnetic makes it slightly easier. But it’s pretty much a wash.
