There are some similarities. But as someone who left Avid a long time ago partially for the way it manages media, I find FCP X more workable. Now I could be not up on the way Avid organizes things. But Avid just threw everything together in the same folder. Because they were MXF files, you couldn’t view them without Avid. So there was no OS structure to the media.
The same is not true with FCP X which actually uses folders and files that the OS recognizes. Not to mention you can just drop a file in the “Original Media” folder and it shows up in the event. There is a lot more manual manipulation at the OS level that can happen with FCP X. I use NeoFinder to generate a visual catalog of all my material. You couldn’t do the same with Avid.

I don’t think you’ll find any disagreement here that Apple needs to fix things. But, let the perfect NLE throw the first stone. 🙂

This would be a great feature to have. And I don’t get why Bill thinks it would upend FCP X’s organizational structure. Having more capabilities in a program is better not worse.
The way I’d imagine it working is you could select all clips in a project (timeline). Right-click or menu item “Make Favorite in Event(s)”. Simple, elegant, useful. Why not?

I’m not sure anyone is being disparaging. But when you post 10 great Premiere tips on an FCP X or Not forum, I don’t think you should be surprised when people analyze that and compare it to FCP X – favorably or otherwise. I don’t see how anyone stepped over the line.

FCP X has drop shadows? Honestly I never noticed. I’m too busy getting s**t done with it. I can say without hesitation, they haven’t slowed me down in the slightest.

If you haven’t missed the focus on occasion, you haven’t been in this business very long. The fact is, it has happened to everyone. Especially when you’re interviewer, camera person, audio person, and producer all at the same time.
Unsharp Mask is a good method for sharpening. It doesn’t come with FCP X, but Alex Goliner has a free one here.

I had a problem where I thought I was using USB 3, however it downgraded one drive enclosure to USB 2.0. I’m now using a different USB 3 enclosure.
Open “About This Mac” from the Apple Menu. Then More Info.. Then System Report. Select USB under hardware. Your drive should be under a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Bus. If it’s under USB Hi-Speed Bus, then it is using USB 2.0.

Right click in event somewhere and select “New Compound Clip”. In custom settings, make sure timecode is 00:00:00:00. Double-click to open in timeline. Drop clips in. Now use that Compound Clip to edit with. Break Apart when you have your clips in place if you like.

I always use it outside FCP X. I found it extremely difficult to get a noise sample from within FCP X. And Spectral Repair is impossible. My procedure. Disable (V) other tracks to get the sound isolated in FCP X. Set in and out in timeline. Export to AIFF. Right-click file and open with Izotope RX. Make adjustments. Save as .WAV file. Drag straight into timeline. Disable original audio track. Enable (V) other tracks.

For fades to and from black, I always use the “Dark” setting. The “normal” setting goes to quickly from black to the video.
