    Noah,
I thought the CMOS rolling shutter was when flashes go off. I did a lot of research (I guess not enough) about potential problems with the EX, I did not know that fluorescent lights would also be a problem. This is a steady rolling from bottom to top.

So what’s the best solution in a situation like this?

    Thanks!

Yes, sorry for the sketchy details. I’ve noticed it more fluorescents, but I also noticed it shooting a shot outside at night, which has an artificial light source on the building.

    Thanks!

  • Hi,
I have the opposite problem. I can capture HDV footage as SD, but not HDV native. I am shooting with a Canon XH A1 at 24 frames. It’s not supported, but I’ve heard some have had success. I’ve gotten it to capture in SD. Here’s what I did (it’s admittedly ghetto as I have yet to perfect it):

I use the 1394 port directly instead of the Adrenaline. You can set this in Deck Config., but also I found I needed to toggle the Adrenaline to the 1394 in my Sequence. I set the deck to Generic DV Device NTSC. I also make sure that my camera is set to output HDV, but to downconvert (this may be different for your camera). On my camera, you can only set this before you plug it into the 1394. Then I when I open the capture window, I toggle the Source in the capture window to Offline (icon with line through VTR). I do not set an in point or out point. I start the deck playing and then hit capture. I hit escape to stop. Obviously this primarily works for long captures, like the whole tape.

    It’s that easy…

There is probably a better way, but I’ve searched and tried many ways and have not found it.

    Good luck!

June 12, 2008 at 2:46 am in reply to: Which Avid on an older MacBook Pro?

    Les,
Greetings from an old Discreet edit*or! I own a second gen. MBP (the one before the Core 2). I can’t remember if that’s one with ATI…I think it is. It’s a 2.16GHz(?) with 2GB of RAM. I have Xpress Pro HD 5.2.4 running in Boot Camp. I’m not sure yet, but I don’t think it works.

I can capture okay and when I scrub through the clip, it looks fine. But when I playback, I get audio, but no picture. When I stop, it shows me the frame of video where the timeline stopped. This is with a WiebeTech external 500GB. It has both a SATA and a Firewire 800, both of which I’ve tried with no better result. Also, this is only playing SD video. Same drive/media on the Avid-approved HP nw9440 laptop works without a problem.

I’ve been torturing myself for weeks trying to get my Canon XH A1 (with 24F footage) to capture HDV into Avid. Today, I finally got SD to work. An Avid Assurance genius was kind enough to say that no, they don’t support Canon HDV cameras, because “we only support high-end cameras.” Yeah, and when he’s making lattes after Avid’s next round of layoffs, he’s only going to brew “high-end” coffee.

never mind. I think my problem was that one of my tracking points was too close to the edge of frame.

    Paul,
I spoke too soon. This tutorial worked great on my first clip, but it’s giving me a weird rotation on the second using the same steps. Any ideas? In the tutorial, he says to create a null object and then choose position and rotation. Can I choose position and scale instead. I really only want to animate by position, but that doesn’t two tracking points.

    thanks,

    Joey,
Before I heard back from you I had already started working through Paul’s tutorial link. It worked beautifully. I want to come back and use your technique on another shot, because it looks like another good way.

I threw a little noise onto my now-tracking chunk of wall and it looks pretty good.

    Thanks to both of you!

Joey, that’s what’s confusing. I have tried adjusting the target layer’s anchor point, but it doesn’t track.

Paul, thank you for the tutorial link. I took a quick look at it and will definitely go back and watch it through.

    Eric,
Yes. I made some progress this week with some help from Graeme Natress (let me put in an unsolicited plug for his FCP plugins).

I had exactly the problem you describe when outputting to DVD. One mistake on my end was making an MPEG2 from a sequence that was DV50 (I thought it was better than straight DV). I believe HDV to MPEG2 is also not perfect. Using the Uncompressed 10-bit preset made a big difference, but you said you are already using that, right?

The issue for me is not what it looks like on a broadcast monitor. My graphics don’t alias there. It’s what it looks like on an LCD monitor. So maybe my whole problem is really the issue of interlaced video on a progressive scan monitor and visa versa.

    David,
I’ve been doing well. I’ve been working with an ad agency the past year. It’s been interesting to be working for the Dark Side. I think the production side and the agency side are are converging, but the old ways of doing things are so entrenched it will probably take time to change.

Yes, I’m still working with my brother on a project basis. He owns an Arri SR3 that he is sub-renting in Chicago (he’s still in Minneapolis).

What’s new with you? It looks/sounds like you’ve been staying busy.

    best,

    Brett
