I just found this thread. I’m depressed just seeing it; Mike, I hope that you’ve solved the problem, but it doesn’t look that way from the last post. Are you still among the living?

Everyone (esp. Marek): I’ve only done a couple of tapeless shoots, and this post scares me.

Marek outlines a series of events which could destroy the data on a card (which could be literally priceless). Mistakes happen, especially in field production, but this takes me back to film, and a tired AC opening the wrong door on the magazine. Wow. That’s why we used to put tape all over the magazine – just to slow ourselves down, in part.

I can see myself committing any of the offenses that Marek listed. So I have to ask: Would different cards make this sort of calamity less likely or its consequences less severe?

Are you folks using two means of recording as fail-safe? Am I reading way too much into Mike’s plight? What’s the deal here?

Emre, does the GoPro offer any way of checking the framing? The website mentions an LCD back as an option (but not yet).

I don’t know what a modal window is; I don’t use Popcorn Island. I’m on Snow Leopard. Are you getting the same kind of spurious crashes? i.e., the program works fine, but when you exit it tells you it crashed?

re: Making the Macs visible to the PCs – much easier than I expected; I found a how-to by Googling it. The relevant article for me (for XP on the Windows side) was at https://www.mac-connect.com/win_mac_samba1.php.

re: Time Machine – haven’t been doing it, but that is simply inertia on my part. Thanks for reminding me I should be using Time Machine!

Network-wide LTO backups – I decided it was probably something I should hire out. I plan to buy an update of my LTO software (Retrospect Professional) and hire a consultant from the local Retrospect dealer to configure it. I haven’t yet done that, so I can’t report on how viable it is, or whether an incremental approach works.

That’s good, but for the user (like me) who keeps getting these inscrutable crash reports, it’s a little frustrating not to be able to send them to someone (or even to a web-based “AI” service) who could understand them. It’s convenient for the software company to receive them, but there’s little value for the user.

When you get short “error message” reports, it’s easy to google the exact phrase and find someone who’s encountered and solved the issue. But these crash reports are so voluminous that I can’t even start to know what section would be relevant – so the google approach is out.

I’m glad Adobe responds to certain reports; it’s never happened here though.

Thanks. Just dreaming, but I’m also interested in the information flow the other way. It would be a great step forward in software/Web 3.0 if companies like Adobe could receive the crash report and then automatically send their analysis back to the user.

Not my place to say this perhaps, but unless you’ve been producing a weekly show on a regular basis, I’d be very cautious about using a DSLR. I suspect most people are using DSLR’s for shorter form videos, or for indie features, but not for turning out 30 minutes, week after week. That kind of grind is quite daunting, especially if you don’t have the money to hire lots of help.

Your viewers will probably be much more concerned with good content than with the ultimate in imagery.
