It depends on what you mean by “a video camera.” Although certain DSLRs will shoot video, they don’t come close to the convenience and utility of a made-for-videography video camera.

I enjoy shooting video with my Canon 60D, and admire its capabilities. But when I pick up my EX1R to shoot video, it fits like a glove. Everything I want is right there. The Canon fits like a … really padded mitten. (Although Magic Lantern helps, it is not without its problems.)

I was a lifelong Nikon shooter, btw, and never thought I’d like Canon, but I really, really like their equipment now.

Okay, I’m about to talk out of the OTHER side of my mouth.

Ken had a good point. By being heroes all the time, “Making It Happen,” and accommodating the worst behavior of clients, we are to some extent degrading the profession.

The long-standing discussion in the Business & Marketing Forum of “grinders” — a.k.a. the clients you should discard for purely financial reasons — could be expanded to include clients who should be abandoned for continually exhibiting poor planning or general disrespect for the process.

If only!

It would be fun to say “I won’t work under these conditions,” but so far, the pleasure and rewards of Working has overwhelmed any discomfort of Bad Conditions. If I get much busier, I may be able to have one of those moments – I’ll keep you posted!

That’s what I was wondering; how can you use the same intervalometer on the 5D and the 60D, or am I reading you wrong?

Well, it’s like this…

I ask for adequate space, I arrive, I find it is not adequate, and there really, truly is no other space to do the shoot. So it’s cancel the shoot, forget the fact that other people have traveled hundreds of miles to be there, or it’s go ahead and do the shoot the best we can.

I agree with you, but that’s the way it is, and I’d rather know how to pull a rabbit out of the hat, than curse the bunny.

Vello ShutterBoss, terminated by a sub-mini plug. Is the same model of ShutterBoss meant to work with both the 60D and the 5D Mark II?

I just made three quick tests: I set the VelloBoss to run a series of 10 exposures at 1-second intervals on my 60D, with various settings. The bottom line is that shooting RAW+, or using Image Review, seemed to result in problems.

Camera for Tests 1 and 2 was set to Manual exposure, lens was set to AutoFocus. Image Review was set to 2 seconds.
1. When I shot RAW+large JPEG, I got 9 exposures.
2. When I turned off RAW and shot only large JPEG, I got all ten.
3. I turned off Image Review, set the lens to manual focus, shot RAW+large JPEG, and got all ten exposures. BUT – I noticed that when I turned the camera off, about 15 seconds after the series was shot, the camera took perhaps 30 seconds to record the images it had just taken. So if you shoot RAW+, a longer series than just ten images might not work.

fwiw, I use JPEG only, and tend to use smaller JPEG settings, when shooting timelapse, although I realize that a large image is useful for zooming and reframing.

I had several lengths of 1″ square tubing, so I bought a 4′ length of square tubing just big enough to slip over it, forming a long joiner. Very solid, and I already had the connectors for 1″ square tubing, so it was cheap too.

Got to the location and found I could easily hang the lantern from the ceiling after all… But now I know how to deal with this for the next time.

I had some problems early on with that combination. I can’t recall for sure but I think the problems went away when I reduced the processing load on the 60D. That could have been by turning off the image review &/or choosing a smaller image size &/or recording only .jpg, not RAW+.jpg.

Sounds familiar! I upgraded from the Z1 to the EX1R also, and life is better in every way. Better image quality, more light sensitivity, less DOF. The biggest change is going tapeless.

I use regular SxS cards. I have had one scare where the camera didn’t like the card for a power cycle, but have lost no media. Luckily I have an older Mac Pro 15″ with an Express Card slot, which expedites downloading in the field.

I’m interested in your remark about the Focus hard drive. Would someone else with first-hand experience be able to say whether that could work with the EX1R?

You’re going to like life with the EX1R. It’s in a sweet spot for price/performance that is hard to beat.
