    [Scott Clements] “I believe that all projects an editor produces should sound as good as he can possibly afford to make them”

    I agree with your sentiment, and with your word choice: “should”.

    But they “must” be optimized for the speakers that the audience is using.

    [Todd Terry] “That bigass fan “

    Yeah, it was the fan that made me wonder whether this has some new, super-bright LEDs.

    I was expecting a different kind of reply, given the title of the OP. Web videos are played back on very small speakers, right? Or perhaps headphones. Does that change the way we should be mixing and monitoring audio when creating them?

    April 5, 2013 at 6:06 pm in reply to: “Title Remote Not Set”

    [Stan Jones] “When you add a menu to a new project first, Encore sets the title remote, and you get no warning if it is not set.”

    Please explain. What do you mean by adding a menu to a new project “first”? If there is a procedure that you know to keep this from happening, could you please share? When I get the warning, and try to set the title remote, Encore won’t let me do that.

    To answer Brian, I still have the problem after the upgrade to CS6.

    April 1, 2013 at 1:59 pm in reply to: wireless frequencies to be sold?

    What I take away from the piece is:

    1. the spectrum is valuable, especially as more and more wireless devices are created and sold;
    2. there are some very powerful forces (cell phone companies, etc.) out there, scrapping for every slice of it they can get;
    3. the frequencies that we think we should be able to use “for free” may be up for sale some day;
    4. the government is looking under the mattress for pennies;
    5. if Broadway is scared, so should we be. In the face of the big buyers of spectrum, our community is disorganized and relatively powerless.

    The 700 MHz range is gone; the FCC is now targeting the 600 to 700 range, and the beat goes on.

    March 29, 2013 at 11:12 pm in reply to: Issue with local TV station

    There could be many reasons for a station not to be interested, several of which have been stated already. You are asking them to sell something they created wearing their “journalist” hats. This could well compromise their standing as journalists. After all, they don’t know, or can’t be assured, of what you will do with the footage.

    It is probably harder to use footage in a cooperative fashion than if you were openly antagonistic. For example, The Colbert Report and The Daily Show use news coverage all the time (I assume without permission). You may want to investigate the concept of “Fair Use”.

    [Rick Wise] “it works so well with the Zone system.”

    I thought the Zone System had mainly to do with black and white photography. Do you use it for cinematography/videography?

    In a big market, you will only stand out if you can specialize. If you are just another Final Cut/Premiere/Avid editor, you can compete with all the other people with those skill sets, and getting the job may have more to do with connections than anything else.

    If you learn something more exotic, you will have fewer competitors. What that “something more exotic” is, is the question.

    If you intern, don’t just keep doing what you’ve been doing – learn something new.

    [Spencer Averick] “Humanscale Float Table. Definitely expensive at around $1300 “

    Looks like you got a bargain! I looked at the website, and it prices out at almost double that. Did you find a dealer who discounts?

    Shane, I know nothing about Element 3D, but I have been checking out the Video CoPilot website; and it appears that on that website, there is a forum which might help you more than this one has. I wish the COW Element 3D forum had more activity, as I like the overall COW site, but it doesn’t appear to be the place to go for help with Element 3D.
