You can argue that it was “botched” all you like – and I know you’ll find a whole lot of support.

But I still think that’s a narrow “top down” view that best fits the narrative of the “class” of facility users who weren’t there in the beginning for the original FCP – and who may be more ticked off because (and this is my personal feeling only) Apple’s actions have annoyingly pointed out issues of continuing weakness in the entire industryl. If I’m wrong, shops will just switch programs, take it in stride just like a major upgrade, and keep moving on.

Let’s all face it, if the editing industry was healthy and robust, this would be a blip. But instead, our industry is pretty rocky. (That post about Video Post Production Houses being among the top ten “dying” business categories was tres scary, no?)

So it’s change on top of upset.

You can take as many “alternate paths” as you like. But if when you get to the city gates, and find that everybody’s packed up and moved on, the path you took to get there is NOT really the issue.

If this is even only partly true, the important thing is for ALL of us to rethink our assumptions as much as we can. Because change brings not just disruption, but opportunity as well.

You’ve clearly at ease with the idea of the “traditional” timeline where if something isn’t on the timeline, that is a single state representation of nothingness.
Cuz, in Legacy a blank spot on the timeline is precisely that. Nothing. And you can’t do a damn thing about it.

In X, it’s something. (A gap clip, to be precise) As something it can take on attributes.It can be tracked, it can be accounted for. It can connect to stuff. When it’s nothing – nothing is possible except that it sits there.

That this doesn’t “work” for you is no indication that it doesn’t work for some of us.

Do I understand you’re applying effects to the RAW full length clips rather than to just the RANGES you want to use out of them?

This seems like a possible point of inefficiency. For example, If I’d shot 30 minutes of footage, but only was going to use 5 minutes of it, it would seem much more efficient to apply the computation heavy effects only to the ranges of the clips that I was intending to use.

I’m not sure this is your problem – but I’m suspicious of applying calculation intensive effects to large swathes of stuff that I’ll never actually want to use. It seems like a lot of unnecessary calculation and “under the hood” references to a whole bunch of frames for no purpose.

YMMV, just thinking out loud here.

Nope.

If you’re alleging that this is apples way – history has already proved you’re misunderstand things.

In a system where there’s little or no choice, that may be true, but in an environment where there IS choice, any company that says something that upsets the majority of their customers, will lose.

Clearly Apple believes that there are more people who will eventually understand and appreciate “their way” via FCP-X than there are in the class of customers whom they will lose due to the change.

And so far, history has shown their thinking to be right much more than wrong.

Past that, we’ll see.

I too am woefully ignorant of the traditions of film, but as I recall, film was actually the first “non linear” editing tradition wasn’t it?

You came back with your field footage from developing. You cut it into scenes, hung it on the wire as celluloid strips. Then the editor could pick and choose from any of them, in any order, to assemble the cut. The actual editing was essentially done as a “non-linear” assembly.

It was only when videotape came along that the images were all baked onto a linear “time stripe” and you had to shuttle back and forth and mark electronic ins and outs to do your “assemble edit” – which forced the workflow to be LINEAR, just as the videotape was.

Every primary source was essentially ALWAYS stuck in linear time on tape, unlike the movie process.

That’s how I kinda recall it, anyway.
