[Michael Gissing] “There might be one more MacPro but I would never base a business decision that needed powerful desktops on expecting Apple to provide for my needs.”

The thing is, today’s laptops are every bit as “powerful” as yesterdays primary desktops.

Out of curiosity, I looked at the “business machines” I’ve primarily depended on over the past 30 plus years.

Note the similarity between the processing grunt when I moved from my MacPro to my MacBook pro.

And the “experiential” difference was smaller (IMO) than the technical one. Maybe it’s the FCP X integration, maybe it was my ability to specify a “bespoke” GPU for my laptop in an era where much of the processes of modern video editing have been re-coded to run on GPUs over CPUs – but for whatever reason, I didn’t lose a single step in dumping my desktop orientation.

This is, put simply, the fastest, most fluid editing system I’ve ever sat behind.

That’s a HUGE change – particularly when you look at those price points.

Chasing desktop grunt might be over for me, unless there are compelling reasons a new modular MacPro really kicks tail for ProRes RAW or the ever increasing camera raster sizes we are facing.

It just feels like a much different ballgame now.

A whisper is a really low amplitude signal.

To record them well, you’ll need a really low overall noise floor to match. And you seldom get that in field recording situations.

Personally, I’d go ahead and do the best you can in the field – but expect to loop the sound in post.

The ADR session would be in a proper vocal booth treated to remove virtually all extraneous noise like HVAC, line hum or the like.

Once you have a perfectly clean recording, you can boost or compress the VO as needed.

But again, having a pristine noise floor is the key.

    My 2 cents.

  • [Andy Field] “Bill,

You missed the entire point of my post — Apple had the perfect portable editing machine….and then in it’s never ending quest to make things thinner — got rid of useful ports (USB 3.0 – card readers, headphone jacks) and requires you to either carry a bag full of dongles or buy one of the 100 to 200 dollar jury rigged set ups to get the ports back you had…. It’s not that i “can’t afford” to buy the things, I don’t want the extra baggage.

Or, alternatively YOU are seeing Apples moves through your predjuidicrs in the same way I am – and fail to see that while it is quite possible I am wrong, isn’t it equally possible you are?

Maybe the thinness thing actually saves Apple millions on shipping by increasing the number of units they can put in a standard shipping container? Maybe not drilling headphone jack holes through an otherwise sealed case reduces interior dust or humidity issues and leads to longer component life. Maybe what you see as Extra Baggage I see as a move on Apples part to do more I/O wirelessly via Bluetooth or WiFi something that may make traditionall headphones less and less useful?

I don’t know if I’m correct about these things – and you don’t know if you are – either.

But the indisputable overriding metrics are that Apple keeps making tons of money, so more people clearly feel that they are making overall better choices than their competitors.

Remember with the 2.5million seat announcement at NAB – simple math tells us Apple made at LEAST 3/4 of a Billion Dollars selling FCP X

It will be nice if they actually do listen to their editors and come up with a powerful machine with the ports, graphics and computing power to slice through any project, no matter what NLE you use.

Well, not if catering to those editors risks losing Apple the momentum that they have already achieved. Exactly why should I be forced to drag around a chunky, extra beefy MacBook simply because somebody else wants to run older non- optimized code on it?

Cuz that’s what you’re kinda saying, isn’t it?

Just food for thought before I shut the lights out before I close out NAB day one.

[Steve Connor] “Cue post from Bill about that’s what he’s been saying about FCPX all along :)”

    No time.

FCP X 10.4.1 drops tomorrow. I have an Atomos Inferno Shogun to use all week plus I’m recording The Atomos CEOs presentation at the LumaForge stage at NAB on the new ProRez RAW workflow. .Plus running Softrons MultiCam Logger system all week or the Faster Together stage!

Plus, as usual I get to help Mike and Dan give away $100,000.00 worth of production goodies at the Supermeet Raffle.

So I’m not sure I’ll have time to do much more than eat, sleep and work for the whole NAB week.

[Michael Gissing] ” This forum isn’t and never has been despite recent attempts to banish us pesky debaters”

Uh,, nobody has EVER attempted to banish anyone.

I just don’t want the forum to become a sea of AVID only or ADOBE discussions.

There are specific forums for those.

I think it’s reasonable for this one to retain at least a modicum of relevance for the FCP X users who see the forum name – and expect the posts here to relate to that.

  • [Andy Field] “Apple listening to its editors? Not lately”

Or they just aren’t listening to you?

Thomas Grove Carter at NAB last year had the whole Ed Sheeran video running in his 2017 MacBook Pro along with a highly complex :60 AUDI commercial and he didn’t seem to have any problems cutting the heck out of things live in front of 1000 other editors at the Supermeet.

It was a stock “off the shelf” MacBook Pro. No different than one you can walk into any Apple Store and walk out with tomorrow. Same Public build of FCP X – and the same Samsung T3 USB-C connected SSD you can buy on-line anywhere.

Look, if the cost of a few cable adapters are a dealbreaker for you – I don’t know what I can tell you.

My MacIi FX from the late 1999s cost me $17,000 as configured. Hardware costs today are relative peanuts. It’s still real money, but it’s just not a major factor for most business level users.

Toms Laptop Was maybe $350O.00 maxed out.

If that’s too much for you to invest in a fast and effective edit rig, or want to save money on a different set of decisions, that’s entirely up to you.

  • [Neil Goodman] “They said that about the trashcan too. Boy were they wrong that time, and the discontinuing it w/o even one upgrade cycle is proof of that.”

    Quite Correct.

But they also re-booted things significantly between the Newton and the iPad – and THAT appears to have worked out extremely well.

    We’ll see how this goes.

[Michael Gissing] “But don’t pretend this forum is here just for just FCPX users. Never has been so stop trying trying to railroad it from its original debate purposes.”

I’ll just note that Tim and the forum runners elected to CHANGE the name of the forum – largely because the “or not” part of the debate was felt to be obsolete.

Many people opined at the time that X had achieved all the functional parity it needed so that the “or not” part of the issue was pretty much settled.

And I think that was obviously the correct call, since FCP X is gaining at least half a million global users a year as Apple announced yesterday.

It took a few years for the first FCP X million. Apple said at NAB last year it reached two million FASTER than the still beloved Legacy – and now it’s growth rate appears to be at least 20% annually.

    That’s seems pretty darn healthy.

[Bob Zelin] “I just don’t know why you don’t get upset with all of this. “

Don’t know about anyone else, but for me, part of it is knowing that if I’m traveling to an important edit gig and ALL my luggage is lost, I can walk into any Apple store on the planet (after I stop to buy clothes and toiletries) and be fully functioning as an editor pretty much anywhere on the planet within an hour.

    Safely, securely, effectively, and conveniently.

That kind of security, in part, keeps me from getting too upset.

Basically, hardware has all become far, far less “mission critical” for me in this era.

I’m here to add IP in the form of editorial knowledge and judgement – not to provide systems engineering chops.

That stuff is far better left to integration experts like Bob.

    My 2 cents.

I figured a direct link to the source was more appropriate. FWIW.
