September 6, 2015 at 3:05 pm in reply to: Sony a7s, Black Magic 4k, Canon c300 or something entirely different. Share your knowledge and experience.Hi Andreas – I am a GH4/BMPCC shooter, but with a $4500 budget, I would recommend the $3198 Sony A7r II.
With internal 4K, S-LOG, 5-axis in-body stabilization, higher still image resolution and a moire-free APS-C mode it is a much better still/video hybrid camera than the A7s or the GH4.
Here is what this camera can do:
– 這是一個小世界 – IT’S A SMALL WORLD by Filippo Chiesa (with the Sony RX100 IV)
– Working day in the mountains with Slovenian Army Cougar AS AL 532 by Uros Podlogar Photography (first video ever shot by this photographer – all handheld with 5-axis stabilization)
– a7R II Busker handheld ungraded by Dan Chung
In my view, this is the best camera for stills and video in this price range and a much better handheld camera than the A7s.
Hope this is helpful and good luck with your upgrade!

I recommend you jump on it. $800 is a great price for a full frame camera with a headphone jack and 1080/60p slow motion that can give you results like these:
Koco Blaq 2015 Fashion Line by Joe Gunawan
If you don’t like it, you can always sell it for a couple of hundred dollars more than you bought it for and buy a camera with 4 times your 7D’s resolution, the $797.99 4K Panasonic G7.
This camera can give you results like these:
Indianapolis 500 In 4k by Bonocore Visual Studios
Away from the City by Irfan Khokhar
Pasa Tiempo behind the scenes – in 4K shot with a panasonic G7 and Ronin M by Dourado
Either of these $800 choices would be an upgrade from your 7D.
Hope this is helpful and good luck!

July 25, 2015 at 9:16 am in reply to: Best Camera and Rig for long, live event shooting?Glad I could help!
The 3G-SDI out pushes a max 1080/60p.
Sadly, if you want 2160p out, you’ll have to use HDMI.
Again, hope this is what you’re looking for.
Best,
Bill

July 24, 2015 at 2:09 pm in reply to: Best Camera and Rig for long, live event shooting?Hi Clint – you might want to consider the new, light weight $3495 JVC GY-LS300. I’ve shot with this camera, and it is a terrific large sensor, interchangeable lens live streaming event camera in a very compact package.
With a $9.23 Wi-Fi USB Adapter, you can stream directly from the camera’s IP address over wi-fi, with no need for an external encoder – as seen here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwP7CNgI13U
You’ll need to put it on a rig and add a viewfinder to get it up on your shoulder, but the total weight will still be less than the Sony.
Here it is rigged up on a $1520 Zacuto Indie Recoil:
The $3450 (with mounting arm) Zacuto Gratical OLED EVF is pictured, but all you need is a $950 Zacuto Z-Finder EVF Pro
Nice first look video from Zacuto:

Nice review from Rick Young’s Movie Machine (with footage):

I can’t say enough good things about this camera. It is 100% compatible with affordable Panasonic power zoom lenses (with the manual sensor crop) and I really enjoyed shooting with it – plus, even with the Zacuto shoulder rig and EVF, it costs less than the FS7.
Hope this is helpful and good luck!

Hi Alan, I use a $20 Nikon G to micro 4/3 adapter to adapt all of my Nikon F and G lenses to my GH3.
That said, the 2X crop on the GH3’s micro 4/3 sensor will make your lenses appear a little longer than the 1.5x crop on your D90.
You don’t need a $429 Metabones Speed Booster unless you want to reduce the GH3’s crop to 1.42x.
Hope this is helpful and good luck!

Pretty sure the cable Steve linked you to is for the 5D. This is an easy mistake to make.
For Rebels, you will need to modify your camera with free Magic Lantern Firmware (the T5i/700d download is here).
When that’s done, you can plug the Sescom DSLR-550D-HOCF A/V Out Headphone Monitoring Cable ($44.95 in the US, about £40.50 via eBay UK
) into your A/V port and monitor what you are recording to your camera’s soundtrack.
Hope this is helpful and good luck!

July 2, 2015 at 2:17 pm in reply to: Camcorder for $3000 (events, commercials, documentary)Hi Clifton – for what you’re trying to do, you might want to consider the 4K JVC GY-HM170 – which is on sale right now for $1795 with a free XLR adapter/top handle.
Here is the image quality you can expect from this camera at 4K (shot on the HM200 – the same camera with live streaming. Please watch at 2160p and your monitor’s highest resolution):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPE1DwgVdGs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VH0a0NyrNis
Here is a nice review from Rick Young at Movie Machine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dkKN5ZdOtc
I have shot with the HM170’s large sensor/interchangeable lens stable-mate, the $3495 (on sale, body-only) JVC GY-LS300, and these are terrific, easy-to-use, pro camcorders (if you can stretch your budget a little, you might want to consider the LS300 with a Kipon autofocusing adapter for your EF lenses).
The LS300 has a Hollywood-sized Super 35 sensor and performs well in low light – plus the ability to live stream to USTREAM and other services from its own IP address with a $10 USB IP adapter, as seen here:
The LS300 produces a very nice Ultra High Definition “4K” image.
Here is the image quality you can get from this camera (please watch at 2160p):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYCdxMrvAoA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S47dceBcuJI
And a very nice overview from Zacuto:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rifaOQ5bwOU
I love my GH4, but with a 3k budget, you can get a purpose-built camcorder with pro mic inputs, built-in ND filters, a top handle and dual SD card slots.
These are standard pro camcorder features that hybrid still/video cameras such as the GH4 (and 5D Mark III) lack.
Hope this is helpful and good luck!

Hi Marty,
A $250 dolly with 12′ of track will add a lot of production value to your setup, as seen here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27t6Us7dIP0
Example shown is for the more expensive Swift ProAim, but the Advanced Digital dolly will give you the same results.
And if you can stretch your budget total by $11, you can get a $161 Neewer 576 LED Light Panel too.
Hope this is helpful and good luck!

May 31, 2015 at 11:29 am in reply to: GH4 problem with motion blur and stuttering visionSorry to see this, Craig.
You may have run into an issue where your LEDs are a little off from your 50 MHz line frequency.
As RED says on their “cinephotography tools flicker-free video” page, “…artificial lighting may flicker independent of the power source with some neon and LED lights”.
Is there any way to experiment with your 1K lights and different shutter angles/speeds before your next shoot?
Hope this is helpful and good luck!

Three extra stops of dynamic range (15 versus 12) plus the extra resolution.
If the $4995 4.6K Mini produces results like those seen in this test of the classic URSA with the same higher resolution sensor (embedded about a third of the way down the page), then the 4.6K camera is definitely worth the extra $2000.
I plan to get the 4.6K Mini, if I can afford it. But I will settle for the 4K version if I can’t swing the extra $2K.
Good luck with your decision!
