    Caleb Armstrong,

I first met Premiere 6.0 when I bought my Matrox RT 2000/RT MAC. I tought Premiere 6.0 was a joke compared to FCP when using the Matrox cards. I sold my RT 2000 and bought the Canopus Storm. I was not happy about using Premieer 6.0 to edit. Premiere Pro is a much better program than Premiere 6.0. 5 years ago I would have opted for FCP over Premiere 6.0 but as of now I would opt for Premiere Pro CS3.

    Zane,

Is your friend an idiot, retarted or dishonest? Honest PC shops do not repair a broken USB ports or even a broken IDE ports on the MOBO. Why? It would be cheaper to replace the MOBO. If they can fix it for less than $45.00 they will. Like I said people that are ignorant about computers and printers can get ripped off real easy. You were one of those people but now you know better. Would you pay $250.00 to fix a $200.00 multi function printer or would you buy a new $200.00 dollar mulitfuntion printer? Only a fool would pay $600.00 to fix a MOBO. I admit it could easily cost $250.00 to actualy fix a multi function printer because of the labor ($45.00-$50.00 per hour) but most honest technician will tell you to buy a new one. I do not doubt that Apple would charge $1900.00 dollars to fix a $1600.00 computer but you must be wise enough to know you can fix it for $1600.00 yourself just by buying a new one. What you pay for repairs and what it should actualy cost are two different prices.

Most shops only charge $40.00 to install hardrives (compUSA did it free)becuase it is easy. MOBO might be about $70.00 and CPU instals are about $50-$60. These instal only take 10-30 minutes. Don’t let Apple rip you off again.

    Paul Harb,

I admit both Mac and PC user were a bit conserned about the Macromedia buy out. It seems Adobe wanted to be the first to offer an audio, video, print and web solution. It makes sense for Adobe to do this. There are many post production house in my area that do offer print, web and video solution. For many add agency that offer web, print and video solutions the Adobe CS3 Master Suite just make sense. The fact that FCP can cut film or that fact that Motion is cheaper solutuion than AE does not matter at all. It is Adobe’s ability to let the web designers share files with the print and video departments that makes the Adobe CS3 so attractive. I am glad Macromedia was bought out because Adobe is indeed doing a fine job with the products.

    Paolo Ciccone,

Many FCP user are in the same situation as you. Many FCP users have bought the CS3 Suite for AE, Photoshop, Illistrator and Encore. They use all the programs in the CS3 package except Premiere Pro. Those that have chose to test the waters have been surprised at how good Premiere Pro is (PP CS3 is not great) and how much FCP and PP CS3 have in common. As a stand alone editor Edius and FCP may be a tad bit better than Premiere Pro but when you combine the sum of parts in the Creative Suite Premiere Pro out shines FCP and Edius should you use AE and Photoshop. It really is a matter of what will work best for you. Just because more films we cut with an Avid or FCP does mean they are the best solution for everyone. I say try the 30 day tial version of the Adobe Creaive Suite to see if you like Premiere Pro. I think you will.

This has turned out to be a good thread. There is a lot of agreement as opposed to arguing.

    Jerry,

Not only that FCP represents the ONLY NLE in the world where the OS, Apps and hardware are ALL made by the same company. This fortells faster updates and upgrades with more features coming at you at a faster rate.

The last I knew FCS did not offer Blue Ray but CS3 has for months.

Hey it was the NLE that was used for editing of this years Best Picture Oscar… that should tell you something about what’s considered professional right there…

That’s not to say that Premiere isn’t a decent app. It is. However NONE of the above can be said about it.

Premiere Pro has been used in the production of a few movies (SuperMan for one). As a Premiere Pro user I do not brag about what other have done with Premiere Pro but rather I focus on how the editing program will satisfy my needs. I imagine Vegas Pro could be used for a movie production but know one has done it. If Vegas Pro is used in a movie next month it would still be Vegas Pro 8. I admit Vegas users could brag about it being used in movie production but why? The my dad is better than your dad argument is stupid. In the end it is personal choice and everyone will have different needs. FCP, Vegas, Avid and Edius all work. Stating that FCP or Premiere have both been used in movie productions does not mean they are the best choice for everyone or the best choice to edit a movie.

Premiere Pro may not be the best video editing program but then again it does not suck. Actually I like it and use it over Edius now. Edius is a great Program and I would prefer to use Edius over FCP or Avid because of the realtime editing horse power but Edius does not have the integration with AE, Encore, PhotShop, Audition and Flash. The thought of desinging a logo for print in Photoshop and then importing it into AE or Encore is great. I can even import into flash for a web version of the commercial as a banner. Adobe has indeed hit a home run by offering a full blown multimedia solution for video, print and the internet. I imagine that is one reason Adobe decided to write code for the Mac OS. It is true that Apple does not have anything like the CS3 Master Collection and probably never will but who knows for sure?

I agree that no software program is perfect or bug free.

Chris Borjis posted about a cooling unit being replaced. He did not talk about a liquid cooling system leaking. You have poster your own scenario, Why? Like I said the cost to replace a liquid cooling system would not be $1800.00. The Macs do not even have them. If a liquid cooling system did leak that is a totaly different scenario but we are not talking about a leaky cooling system or a laptop that fell from a tree.

The Logic board would not cost $900.00 dollars and the labor would be less than a half hour worth of labor. Some PC cases make it hard to get at the MOBO but the G5 towers make it easy to replace the logic board. Have you ever built a computer or replaced a logic board (motherboard)? Have you seen the inside of a G5 tower? They are very clean.

On a side not CompUSA, Circuit City and Best Buy all have salesmen that will tell you that you need the warranty because if the CPU goes or the MOBO goes it will be $600.00 to repalce. That is pure BS but many ignorant people believe the salesmen. The time to replace a MOBO is less than one hour at a cost of $40-60 bucks for labor at most repair shops. The cost of a decent MOBO is about $75-$150 unless you have a real highend dual CPU MOBO. Good Core 2 Dual (2.4 GHZ)CPUs can be bought for well under $150.00 and replaced for $40-50 bucks at most shops. MOBOS can be replaced for under $200.00 part an labor at most custom shops. I admit many computer techs try to rip of the customer (Apple may be one of them). I am just glad I can build my own.

    Chris Borjis,

Who told you that about the G5 quad? Every G5 I seen had a huge heat sink and a plexiglasss air flow vent and a fan. That is all there was. They were not liquid cooled. Even if they were liquid cooled it would not be $1900.00 to replace. The G5s have a big plexiglass air flow vent but there is no way that would be anymore than $25.00-$35.00 bucks unless Apple is ripping people off. Plexiglass is not expensive. If the cost of one part is more than the computer how could they make money? They would indeed loose money. My guess is the cost was no more than $120.00 parts and labor.I admit if the CPU was damged it may have been closer to 4 or 5 hundred

  • walter biscardi,

You are saying it is OK for Ben Holmes to call me a troll? I would like proof of this. What thread have I high jacked? I am sorry if I don’t find Ben Holmes to a be a video guru like many of you in these forums. I think Ben was the first one to make personal attacks on this thread. I don’t care who he is. He should read things a little better rather than make assumptions. I thought calling him Boo Boo was a nice way to show him that he made a few mistakes or assumptions when reading my post. Whos fault is that? Walter are you trying to tell me Ben Holmes is a saint? I think Ben got his feathers ruffled because he knows it is not wise to shot in progressive mode if the station requires interlaced. Rather than accept the obvious he opted to but heads with me. Is that wise?

  • Ben Holmes,

Get a grip. 640 X 480 was used by the Targa 2000 capture cards. The Targa 2000 Pro uses 720 X 480. I posted that I used 640 X 480 as a reference. I did not post that it was a broadcast standard Boo Boo. Try to read my post a little better next time. You distort what you read at times. With the right software you can capture 640 X 240, 320 X 480 and even 320 X 240. This can be done with a Pinnacle DC 10 Plus as well.
