Thanks Joe. This is indeed helpful.

Ok now for backup I have 2 External Drives (2.75 TB) so no issues with that.

Joe, will there be a noticeable boost if i use HI-Speed drives such as SSD’s or VelociRaptor 10000 for Scratch Disk AND/OR Project Disks too. ?

    Thanks
    Andy

  • Yes ?

Sorry Todd, i didn’t get that exactly. Can u pls elaborate it for me. I really need that answer as i’m planning to use AE CS3 with 64bit system WIN-7.

    Regards

    Hey Joseph,

Thanks for your input. I’ve heard that you must have at least 3 Drives (Not talking about raid here as SSDs are quite fast now), which you already have – good. So far i’ve got 2 Drives:

    – Intel X25-E Extreme SSD
    – Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 500GB

I’m wondering which next HDD should i buy:
    – SSD, WD VeolciRaptor 10000RPM or Barracuda 7200RPM ?

And after getting them, how to setup all these three drives. I mean which one for OS, scratch disk, application, projects & source files ?

    EXPERT’S ADVICE NEEDED, PLEASE HELP

    Hi Todd, You said:

“After Effects CS4 is a 32-bit application. It can run on a 64-bit operating system. After Effects CS4 can launch multiple instances of the application to render multiple frames simultaneously. On a 64-bit operating system, these multiple instances can use a lot of RAM, thereby taking advatntage of a 64-bit operating system.”

Doesn’t this apply to CS3 as CS3 also supports multiprocessing. Still if what you said is not applicable to CS3 then whats the reason for that?

    Thanks

Hey Walter, Thank you so much. You really helped me on improving my knowledge base.

I’ve pushed my budget keeping in mind that i cannot upgrade to DUAL XEON if i require them later, so i chose to go with workstation motherboard and decided to go for SINGLE X5650 instead of i7-920 or rather Xtreme i7-980X.

    Intel® Coreâ„¢ i7-980X Extreme Edition – 6 Cores
    (12M Cache, 3.33 GHz, 6.40 GT/s – Benchmark Score 10,148

    Intel® Xeon® Processor X5650 – 6 Cores
    – (12M Cache, 2.66 GHz, 6.40 GT/s) – Benchmark Score ??

    – Do you think X5650 having 670 Mhz lesser clock speed will make lot of difference in rendering & scrubbing previews.?

What do you think of this config:
    M/BO: S5520SC + Intel Chassis
    Processor: SINGLE X5650 2.66Ghz (6 Cores), 12M Cache, 6.4GT/s QPI
    RAM: ECC DDR3 1333 – 12GB (2GB per core)
HDD: Intel X-25 Xtreme SDD, 32GB
    HDD 2: Barracuda 7200 RPM
Graphics: Confused between Quadro FX 1800 ELEM & Quadro Fx 3800. Note: Quadro1800 doesn’t support ‘Adobe Mercury Playback Engine’
    19″ Display

    – Do you recommend Quadro FX1800 or should i use this money to buy more 4 GB RAM & get some cheaper Geforece card ?

Thanks again for all your valuable time.
    Regards
    Andy

April 18, 2010 at 7:51 pm in reply to: i7-980X vs Dual Xeon E5620

Thank you so much for your input, John. Just before your last post i finalized X5650, what a coincidence!

The reason : I’m impressed with the power of single i7-980X but i don’t want to restrict myself to a single processor. May be upgrade to DUAL PROCESSOR is required in future, which isn’t possible with i7 at present.

ALTERNATIVE: Only X series of XEON 5600 can compete with i7-980X. Also I have heard that both have same architecture, techincally both have 12M cache, 6.4 GT/s QPI & Clock Speed 3.33 GHz if you go with X5680. But being XEON, X5680 cost $700-800 more than i7. So i decide to go with SINGLE X5660 or X5650 as of now & upgrade later with another X5680 (if Compatible) when price come down.

    i7-980X 3,33Ghz = $999 (Cannot be upgraded)
X5650 2.66 Ghz = $996 (Can be upgraded to DUAL processor)

    BENCHMARKS: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/index.php
SINGLE i7-980X gets score of 10,148
SINGLE X5680 gets score of 10,538
    SINGLE OVERCLOCKED X5650 gets 12,239 (58% Overclocked)

There’s no benchmark availble for X5650 at stock speed but (by calculation) i can see it touching almost 8,000 & i’m fine with it. By little overclocking i can easily reach 10,000 mark without putting much load on procesor. Don’t forget this setup still allows me to add more processor & RAM upto 92GB.

I request you John & others experts to please review my full system Configuration & comment on it.

    M/BO: S5520SC + Intel Chassis

Thanks again John for your support.
So this is it. pls suggest enhancements.

    Thanks
    Andy
