    [Craig Seeman] “H.264 Transport Streams?”

Is there such a thing? I know you can wrap h.264 in an MPEG-2 TS (and Compressor does this for HTTP Live Streaming), but I never heard of an MPEG-4 TS.

    [Craig Seeman] “Compressor 3 didn’t even do H.264 .mp4”

Technically, an .m4v is the same bitwise as an .mp4. But changing the suffix always felt like a hack, even if it wasn’t changing any bits.

[Craig Seeman] “10.0.5 in July I’d guess.”

Time to start speculating about new features!

    Live audio mixing via roles?
    Selectable render scratch?
    Selectable attribute copy/paste?
    Add back ProRes LT?
Versioning that does not require duplication and bloat?

April 10, 2012 at 7:24 pm in reply to: OT: Cool NAB stuff from ATTO

    AWESOME.

Those will saturate an entire Thunderbolt channel, so forget doing much daisy chaining.

Particularly good for the I/O hardware guys’ demos if the first bullet point is indeed true.

The pattern of these updates looks a lot like tick tock.

[Craig Seeman] “FCS legacy is working under Mountain Lion so far. Interesting because I had thought that would be the nail in the coffin for Legacy.”

As long as the Carbon and QuickTime APIs are still there, legacy FCP should still work. I think both of those had been deprecated already (at least in part), but that doesn’t mean they are gone from Mountain Lion. Just that their days are numbered.

(I can’t say for sure because the Mountain Lion dev notes are still under NDA).

[Walter Soyka] “However, most of us here don’t need UNIX. We need things like stability, performance, and security. For a long time, UNIX had them and Windows didn’t, but I’m arguing that’s no longer true.

My main point is this: Creatives can do their work on the Windows platform.

If you think you need to work on a Mac because you’re a creative, or if you think you can’t work on a PC because you’re not a Microsoft IT nerd, you might have an outdated view of the Windows platform.”

Yep. But you gotta admit, this has really only been true since Win7 came out 2.5 years ago. Prior to that, XP was really creaking and Vista was… Vista. It isn’t like Windows didn’t earn that bad reputation it has been recently shaking off.

I like this preview of what Google Glass might look like once you factor in Google’s revenue model:
