I wish I could wait that long but I need this one badly. I wont buy immediately, I want to wait and see how people are reacting to different configurations but I won’t be waiting long. My old imac is driving me nuts.
I don’t really need the FCPX 10.1 update though, everythings going fine. The only real wish I have is proper roundtripping with LogicX

I can think of a couple of reasons why it is more expensive.
I can imagine it it much harder putting 8 or 12 cores in such a small space which leads to higher manufacturing costs. Another reason could be that there much fewer people needing 8 or more cores making it a real pro cpu, and anything pro is usually much more expensive cause the building costs arent carried by a large users base.
Sorry for my crappy english 🙂

December 13, 2013 at 7:40 am in reply to: Capture multiple cameras with media expressThanks Jim Sustacek! I wanted to use the recording capability for direct recording of my tutorials to my SSD without the need of a hyperdeck. i would just use 3 ultra studio recorders + mac pro + wirecast, but since you mentioned that you get a fuzzy image with wirecast (at least compared to each other) I will definitely go with Media Express.
A nice advanced solution (especially for scripting capture) is using the command line bmdtools utilities, specifically bmdcapture coupled with ffmpeg:
https://github.com/lu-zero/bmdtoolsI’ve checked the link but I’m not sure if I’ve got the necessary know-how to do this without screwing things up. I’ll try the multiple instances of ME first I think. I will keep your suggestion in mind though as it might give me better options in the near future.

From what I’ve understood from Marcus Moore is that a maxed out Mac Pro will be $9500,-
So 12 cores, 64GB ram, D700’s, and 1TB SSD
8 core, 64GB ram, D700’s, ad 500G SSD would be $7500 (don’t remember the exact number)I’ve done some estimates based on speculations from Marcus Moore and things I’ve found in the apple store. It’s just guessing but still fun 🙂
Using the base model of $2999(4 core, D300, 16GB, 256GB SSD) you can configure your own model and add the prices below.
Flash Storage upgrade prices
(On the imac you pay $250 extra to go from 256GB to 512GB and $500 more to go to 1 TB)
250GB ssd + $0
500GB ssd + $250
1tb ssd. +$750RAM upgrade prices
(On the iMac you go from 0 to +200 to +600 so i’m using the same “apple-scaling” here. Also, Marcus had his apple representative tell him to upgrade to 64GB would be $1200)
16GB +$0
32GB +$400
64GB +$1200GPU upgrade prices
D300 +$0
D500 +$750
D700 +$2000CPU upgrade prices(there were estimates on some site, can’t remember which)
4 core +$0. ($294 on intel.com)
6 core. +$250. (583 on intel.com)
8 core +$1250 (1723 on intel.com)
12 core. +$2500. (2950 on intel.com) -

December 4, 2013 at 6:33 pm in reply to: Capture multiple cameras with media expressHey Thanks Eric Bowen for chiming in!
I will try that approach, in my case it will probably be DMG files as I’m on a mac, not a windows machine 🙂
First I’m awaiting the arrival of the new mac pro… 😀

Wirecast allows multiple instances, though, and each instance can be set up to access a different device
Actually I own wirecast pro since a couple of days so this would be good news. Is the video quality of each camera capture as good as what I can record in the camera’s internally on SD cards?
I remember Craig Seeman saying you can’t do ISO recording with the ultra studio mini recorders so now I’m wondering what kind of quality you get. Do you know if you can record uncompressed hdmi out with wire cast (i know, wrong thread but i’m trying anyway 🙂

Yeah I agree on the conversion, it is not a straight currency conversion which makes a lot of sense because the mac pro’s are going to be 3049 euro’s for the 4 core and 4049 euro’s for the 6 core. In dollars that is quite a bit more than what US residents are paying although I don’t know if the 2999 dollar mark is including or excluding taxes.
I think I disagree on the SSD prices though. On the iMac you pay about $300 to go from 256GB to 512GB, and another $500 to go all the way to 1TB. Because the base models already have 256GB standard you’ll “only” have to pay about $750-$800 to get 1TB.
But I’ve done some more calculations and I think I’m not too far off this time. In any case it fits the maxed out model, the 8 core config of marcus moore(it comes at 7700 so $200 off), and it fits the jump from the 4 core base model to the 6 core base model. I’ve also taken the upgrade prices for iMacs to fill in the blanks 🙂
To the base model you can configure your own model and add the prices below.
Flash Storage upgrade prices
(On the imac you pay $250 extra to go from 256GB to 512GB and $500 more to go to 1 TB)
250GB ssd + 0
500GB ssd + 250
1tb ssd. +750RAM upgrade prices
(On the iMac you go from 0 to +200 to +600 so i’m using the same “apple-scaling” here)
16GB +0
32GB +400
64GB +1200GPU upgrade prices
D300 +0
D500 +750
D700 +2000CPU upgrade prices
4 core +0. ($294 on intel.com)
6 core. +250. (583 on intel.com)
8 core +1250 (1723 on intel.com)
12 core. +2500. (2950 on intel.com) -
With all the info here and in this article: https://www.marco.org/2013/11/26/new-mac-pro-cpus and info found in the app store I started calculating, it’s guessing(which is fun!) but this is what came out:
Maxed out:
base price 3000
12 core 2500+
D700 1750+
64 GB 1200+
1TB SSD 750+ (going from 500-TB adds 500 in apple store)
Total 9200should be 9500 So one or more items are a bit under priced
EDIT: according to prices on https://alex4d.com/notes/item/maxed-out-2013-mac-pro-price ($9160 for maxed out setup) 9200 is only $60 overpriced so the only unsure thing here is the balance between the D700 price and the 12 core cpu.
8 core Marcus Moore config
base price 3000
8 core 1500+
D700 1750+
64 GB 1200+
500GB SSD 250+
Total 7700should be 7500 So one or more items are a bit over priced.
EDIT: according to prices on https://alex4d.com/notes/item/maxed-out-2013-mac-pro-price ($7270 for maxed out setup) 7700 is overpriced by $400 so that might mean the price for the 8 core cpu is less than the +1500 i listed.
For my own ideal setup these are the speculated prices:
8 core personal config
base price 4000+
8 core 1000+ price increase is related to the 6 core config
D500 0+
32 GB 600+
500GB SSD 250+
Total 5850+I might though opt for the D700’s but that makes for a price increase of $1000.
Estimated costs of GPU’s
D300= +0
D500= +750
D700= +1750 -
Thanks for the reply Craig!
not being able to capture is a bummer. Actually I think I came accross another post of your somewhere on the web (this thread: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/Multiple-camera-connection-mac-book-85213.S.212720894 also wirecast related) where you said that you can use a max of 2 ultra studio recorders at a time. So my “dream setup” of using 3 UMR’s is not going to work then?
Perhaps I can live with the fact that I’m not going to be able to do the ISO recordings during live streaming but could I just capture uncompressed video from my 3 cams to SDD when I’m just making video tutorials at home on my mac pro or is that just not possible with the mini recorders. (also don’t know which software to use)thanks again for all your insights, they’re really helpful!

“That 8-core, 500GB, 64GB RAM, and D700s machine was priced for me at $7,700. Which leave me a bit of room since I’ll have to buy some displays. Probably refurb Thunderbolt ACDs unless they offer something in a 4K flavour…”
In that case Marcus I have good hopes that my 8-core+D500s+32G+500G might be priced a bit lower than that $6400 you mentioned.
My preferred specs are quite close to yours so If going from 64G to 32G is a $600,- reduction that means that having D700’s instead of D500’s equals a price increase of $700,-. I thought the price difference between a single D500 and D700 would already be quite large and because there are 2 gpu’s you’d have to double that difference. Off course apple got a sweet deal on the GPU’s as they mentioned in October but I kinda doubt the price difference would only be $700 for the d700’s so the pricetag of my setup might actually be in the $6000 range, give or take…
But… Until the release it remains guessing (at least for my preferred specs)…
