If you google it, you’ll find a lot of people having the same problem. I called and talked with a rep from Sony just about a week ago on this very same issue. We’ve been so frustrated with our 2 ex-1s and an ex-3. All have the stuttering zoom. I was told that they put so much effort in the lens that they had to compromise on the zoom control to keep it affordable. It was designed to be this way. We are considering whether to sell them and move over to JVC. The Sony ex1/ex3 are great cameras but if I can’t smoothly zoom, it’s almost useless in our type of work.

Hi Craig,
Thanks for the info and the links. Found them quite informative. If you ever decide to sell yours, I want to be first in line. 🙂 I love the cameras except for that issue. I’ve had to come to grips that I can no longer do creep zooms. I had the DSR-300 prior and loved the zoom capabilities.

Hi Craig,
The one complaint I’ve had consistently about the ex-1 and ex-3 has been the lack of a smooth creeping zoom. Would you mind to share how you were able to get Sony to get you a camera with one? You can PM me if you want. I would love to use speed 2! Some of my 1 camera shoots for seminars, etc., I have had to make 2 camera shoots because of the zoom issue. Been quite frustrating and I’ve complained with no success. -
For now, just using that setup alone. I backup everything when I get back to the office to multiple hard drives. A good friend of mine in the business who has the ex3 and has been using the Hoodman/Transcend combination for some time got me interested in it. He said that he has never had any issues. I did several test shoots before going out on paying jobs with it but I haven’t been disappointed so far. (knock on wood, throw salt over my shoulder, etc.)

I’ve been using the hoodman sxs adaptor since January with the Transcend 32gig class 10 sdhc cards. So far, so good. I’ve had excellent results. I’m shooting on the ex1r and ex3.

March 25, 2011 at 9:28 pm in reply to: no new cam production in japan by sony.moving to laThanks for the input Ron. I’ve been kicking myself for purchasing the ex1 & ex3 a couple of months ago and seeing the nxcam just come out. I don’t feel as down about the purchase now. I too, came from the DSR-300s and so far love everything about the ex1/3 except for the zoom. That’s one place I miss the DSR-300. I just can’t get the slow crawls with the new cameras. Purchased some varizoom controllers and that has helped some. Anyway, I appreciate your input on the nxcam vs the ex1/3.

I have had the same issue in CS4. What worked for me was to insert ‘black’ video in the track underneath the crossfade. If the transition was in V1, I moved it to V2 and put a black video underneath it. For whatever reason, CS4 didn’t like seeing an empty track underneath. I only noticed it when I was fading to black and it didn’t always happen. I made the black video a little longer than the transition but the same length will probably work. Hope it works for you. It is an annoyance.
