[Mick Kalber] “I have downloaded XDCAM transfer from Sony.”

Did you download the XDCAM Transfer standalone application form Sony, or the XDCAM Log & Transfer plugin for Final Cut Pro? They are two separate things. Sony used to make two standalone applications called XDCAM Transfer and Clip Browser. They were both replaced by a newer application called XDCAM Browser that combines both of their functionality.

If you want to import the footage directly into FCP using Log & Transfer, then you’ll need to install the XDCAM EX plugin for Final Cut Pro.

If that’s not working, give XDCAM Browser a try and see if that helps. If not, you may need to look into other utilities designed to recover footage from incomplete or corrupted card structures. Others on those forum are more knowledgable about those tools and can point you in the right direction.

    Good luck!

November 19, 2013 at 11:53 pm in reply to: HDMI or SDI?

    [Bret Williams] “No such format.”

Of course there is. He’s describing PAL SD, which is 720 x 576, interlaced 25fps (or 50i if you want to get technical). PAL HD can either be 720p50 (1280×720) or 1080i50 (1920×1080).

I think the OP is asking if there’s a monitor that can play both PAL SD and PAL HD when fed a signal via HDMI, without the SD looking like crap.

No, not the same thing as deinterlace. Shift fields is a filter that should be under the Video category. It shifts footage up or down one line (field) to ensure proper field order in interlaced footage. NTSC-HD 1080i video should be upper field first. If it is somehow brought in or misinterpreted as lower field first, the effect you described is the result.

[david mayer] “By motion trail I mean a stutter effect – image follows itself – repeats – makes you
a little dizzy to watch it.”

Sounds like classic field order mismatch. Try putting a “shift fields” filter on the stuttering footage (which shifts the footage up or down one field) and see if that fixes it.

You might find this post interesting and/or relevant. Note that the x264 encoder provides the best quality at low bit rates (much lower than some other encoders):

[Craig Seeman] “Even Apple Compressor 4 can do H.264(AVC) .mp4.
    Compressor 3 can’t though.

That’s good to know. I’m still using Compressor 3, and didn’t realize that things had changed in v4.

AVC is simply another name for h.264. There are many options on both Mac and Windows platforms for encoding h.264 mp4 files, including Adobe Media Encoder, MPEG Streamclip (free), Sorenson Squeeze, Telestream Episode, and others.
