  • [Simon Ubsdell] “If I can only get past the dullness …”

dullness my aunt. this below link feels configurable to circumstance to me. and this was V6. I tend to idealise other people’s work practise but I’m doing a fair whack of IV based stuff lately – the kicker is he heavily employs prelude originated range annotated markers. you know, like first cut whatnot.

    https://vimeo.com/64247800 –

and a really nice super smart chat he had about things.

    https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/tips-for-logging-interviews-in-adobe-prelude/

that guy looks extremely effective to me simon, and he was happily hammering in V6.
Have you actually tried V7? because I swear to god its lovely. The timeline is anyway.

  • come on – they’ll get to it – mooney runs weekend competitions where he codes features as part of Zuckerberg style intern deathmatches – have you seen how fast the software is moving simon?

joking aside – come on – that software is moving surreally fast – you are now native timeline turnaround to speedgrade with no penalties in either direction. PPRo development is nuts. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t think the iteration is close to ludicrous right now. It feels like its going exactly as fast as they can type it out.

    leave. premiere/britney. alone.

also, could chris harlan please come in and defend this software.

  • [Simon Ubsdell] “OK, so did anyone ever observe that this stuff is pretty subjective and not really conformable to rational discussion?”

rather – but the thing is I find I like it Simon. The GUI beats everything, I think the timeline is getting delicious, I want to learn to casually sandwich source timelines vertically properly for IV based material selects like I’m seeing it being executed by smart peeps, the annotated marker panel is murderously effective – and well basically, the committee as such designing it is largely the FCP team as was. They really did hire half of them.

Also, and on a more sombre note – FCP has exactly twelve months left to live – Andrew Richards has stated that its bones and marrow in QTkit are formally now deprecated –
that is a polite 12 month apple gong death sentence.

I’m looking at you Ubsdell – as it is presented – do you move to avid X or premiere.

I know the lesser of three weevils when I see it.

  • no, I’m afraid its a silly little editor is FCPX.

much regarded… by those who like a yankee automatic shift sayyy, for those who say there is nothing to be gained and much to be lost by manual control. I mean really – how does that make sense honestly? another man’s automatic is more creative control? Lunacy.

(broad british accent read for that paragraph anyway.)

although it’s all somehow peculiarly true really when you think about it properly.

How could an automatic be preferable? mmm? 😉

  • oh you total madman.

take back every single syllable relating to premiere FCP8 you have just uttered. Take it back right now Simon. I’m throwing the marbles down on the court.

they’re spilt on the court simon.

    Pick. them. up.

(ok – not the one with rent spelt at the centre of the marble – but you understand).

    clarify yourself cur.

  • sweet jesus don’t go there – the bridge under which you are having this conversation Ubsdell – no seriously, there are drips – look up – that is a heavy brick-laid bridge Simon, and there may indeed be a person living directly under it.

as to say – there actually is. I’m not even sure this is metaphorical.

my little piddle of pish: the original sin was committed by jobs. He effectively killed pro editing software by looking at the first cut demo (adobe audition in late 2006) and by waving a maniac’s magic wand he declared it the future of editing. that is actually kind of out there as a thesis as it were.
Its a perfect latter day retrospective reality.

The poisonous despot diktat Jobs laid down that day after seeing first cut demoed, as Randy Ubillos walked away quietly confused, trying to fundamentally reconsider what he had presented for footage ingest and categorisation for FCP – as now being the basis for the entirety of apple’s broader approach to editing… first appeared in iMovie 09 and then subsumed all pro editing. Or like FCP basically. this rather side steps the chicken and the egg.

The villain, as such, is the maniacal vegetable eating totalitarian who viewed that first cut demo. And made an instant decision. (that stuff really is out there – core apple people were disengaging intellectually from the broader perception of pro-editing as early as 06 apparently)

but the villainous moment belongs to jobs alone and how he perceived what he saw – he watched a first stage footage categorisation for FCP demo, that included skimming and a simplified timeline (we at a stretch know skimming because it was right there in that era’s iphoto) and he, jobs, stamped his gnarly fist on the table and said that was editing.

that is the moment of original sin. That’s when tracks and everything else died. It just took a number of years. And a massive concurrent expansion of the company that completely reshaped their essential role.

But still, do consider: in a, say, twenty minute (?) presentation he watched a long time ago, the total lunatic took an instant taste call and that was all apparently all that.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypkKMYuE7ik

I only include this clip to the extent that steve jobs was probably highly intimidating. Galactically intimidating. I can’t conceive what that was like at close quarters – i’ve worked with some types, but you never felt the string really pulling at you where you knew they were basically geniuses – Was Randy Ubillos realistically going to argue with him? was anyone?

meanwhile, PPro looks surreally amazing. that’s quite a little gift from the debacle.

[Charlie Austin] “Before you cut something in to the timeline in your NLE, do you have to make sure that the correct audio tracks are included or not, and make sure you’re not going to overwrite existing clips in the timeline?
    “

seriously – why is that a problem? I’m not even half kidding at this point. Given the natural presence of multiple detached objects that you don’t want to intersect – after effects can be a complicated environment – so can audio editing software – how much does it demand from a professionals brain to examine that?

why is it in editing that there is a guy that turns up on your doorstep saying “man wasn’t editing stupid hard??? what was up with that complexxxity??”

[Oliver Peters] “I would add that the Coens also were cutting on FCP BEFORE Murch cut “Cold Mountain” on it. In fact their move gave him some confidence in proceeding.
    “

yep indeed – and also – after looking it up – Roger Avery with “The Rules of Attraction” in 2003 is cited as an inflection point too.

it lives on too, he said poking at wikipedia – John Carter mightn’t have been the greatest – but it was cut on an FCP timeline.

You’d be curious what the next fincher feature will be cut on. What those dudes Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall feel comfortable with say? – a tremendous amount of PPRo development seems to be hiving towards FCP behaviour lately – the blade tool is now specifically identical with the .1 release, matching FCP7 track patching, join edits, and god knows how much other stuff. the ppro team have nearly completely jettisoned the track patching logic which, to my limited understanding, was a partial match to an avid environment.

Its much more now an FCP live environment where the objects on the timeline and the selection of them and their track is the major decision. It’ll be interesting to see whether adobe can hoover up a serious quantity of editors by simply providing a formidably advanced FCP style environment. If everyone bleeds away to FCPX and avid in either direction then they are on a hiding to nothing. the legend wasn’t that great.

alternatively, if it becomes apparent that the software that held roughly 46% of the american editing market a few years ago was an intellectual sweet spot, and is effectively alive in Premiere Pro 7, is cross platform, being developed by a company that can only make money by selling it, and is being adopted by cutting edge top flight Hollywood Film Makers and Editors, well then you might think Premiere has a deservedly bright future.

Until that is, that 100 million dollar FCPX feature arrives and blows everything up. Larry Jordan is preparing a post, talk, and training series on that one I hear.

[James Ewart] “No not just similar. IDENTICAL.”

ho ho – welll – ok. I was kind of around for that tho you know – I first cut on it at ver. 1.2.5 and convinced my then employer to bring it in as our editing system at ver3 on a blue and white G3 running an ice board for after effects with a 5gig lacie scsi drive – to this day that is the most treasured computer I’ve ever cut on. the whole thing was a dream and I fell in love with FCP instantly. As I seem to recall a lot of our type of people were very keen on FCP – the difference now, if there is any, is that the major debate is taking place within the very FCP community that grew up out of that era.

given the dynamic over a decade ago was quite different, its maybe a little hard to see things as being quite identical, mmm?

Still – As you say – its really only software in the end.
