February 16, 2008 at 5:45 amA very good tip on the three-way corrector in FCP too Walter,
that is a great way to use that filter, but color just looks
like a whole different world. Can’t wait.David

February 16, 2008 at 8:34 amAnyone tried Looks from Magic Bullet?? I love it. One simple tutorial helped me to work with it. Wonderful presets that give your video a real filmlook. Haven’t given Color a real try yet.

That’s a completely different thing. If you’re just looking for a filmlook, then a plug-in is easier. Anyone can slap filters on video, that’s easy and a lot of folks do that. If you’re looking to color grade an entire project, then that’s what Color is. You’re not just giving something a “filmlook”, you’re making the entire project look better or look unique.
If you want to see what I mean, go to my tutorial on prepping your timeline for Color and go to the end of it. I show a series of clips that are old, not great quality BetaSP footage, and I cleaned them up and made them look really good. Not by slapping a filter on them, but by running them through the Primary In, 3 to 6 Secondaries, Custom Vignettes, Noise Reduction and some other enhancements in Color. The end viewer has no idea these shots were “treated” in any way and that’s the point, I brought out the natural beauty within the scenes.

And if you really want some “filmlook” presets, they’re already in the ColorFX bin, you can purchase more from Graeme Nattress, or create your own in the ColorFX bin very easily.

February 16, 2008 at 1:44 pmWell, Looks is not only a filter, it does have nice color correction functions like curves, as well as a lot of other tools. But as I said, I haven’t really dug into Color and I will certainly take a look a your tutorial. Thanks

Yes, we have tested it here for the Red Giant folks. We’re waiting for the realtime external monitoring before trying it again. That’s our biggest complaint right now, you can’t see what you’re doing on the external monitor until you drop out of the plug. It’s probably the closest thing you can get to Color within FCP.
For a Version 1.0 app, it’s good, but it’s definitely not Color and it’s not included free with Studio 2. If you’re looking for a plug-in for FCP, I would still recommend Colorista.

February 16, 2008 at 4:23 pmI have MB Looks and it is a pretty good adjunct
for adding a film look and some other enhancements.
Not that I am some big deal post-expert, I’m not – but I think
Looks needs more work before it is qualified as up to the usual
Magic Bullet/Red Giant quality.
Their tech support was very responsive, but there seem to be some teething problems right now…and no upgrades or fixes since the intitial release in September. Not slamming them – I want Looks to succeed, it’s a great idea.
But it needs some smoothing out.fwiw

February 22, 2008 at 6:13 pmJust another note about the 3-way color filter in FCP is that the image always seems to look like it’s been processed or played with after it’s rendered. It’s not very clean looking.
When I started using FinalTouch, the first thing that I noticed was how clean and sharp the image processing was. It really opened a lot of flexibility to what I could do to an image.
In other works, the quality of the final product is far superior in Color than the 3-way filter.
