[Mark Barton] “Tablets are useful, but they are not a computer replacement yet.”

That depends on what you use your computer for. If you’re just consuming content as most people do, it’s a 100% replacement for your bulky desktop. The only people who really still need desktops are us content creators.

With the exception of editing video, I do everything else on my iPad.

There is a free app that returns the Start Menu to Win 8. My son was running Windows 7 for a couple of years and went onto the pre-release Windows 8 quite early and has been on it at least all this year. After many months he finally expressed his serious dismay and frustration at not having the Start Menu. Very patient I would say. I have him a URL for Pokki, which I had read about. You can find it here and it’s free:

    https://www.pokki.com/windows-8-start-menu

He is delighted with it. A different add-on that I read about earlier, removed the Metro interface and gave back the Start Menu/Desktop system but Pokki gives you both simultaneously. You can operate the way you always used to as well as still learn the new interface in case it’s here to stay.

As for me, I need to buy completely new hardware before I install VP12. I will build it myself, specifically for use with VP12, having bought it early at the upgrade discount price. I am expecting to jump straight in with Win 8, being careful that drivers are available for all my bits and pieces.

Having said all that, if Win8 disappoints me, I will not be surprised. One size NEVER fits all.

    Regards,
    Neil

Thanks Neil, I’ll be sure to check it out. It’s too bad these are needed just to get back the features you had before. What was Microsoft thinking?

just a tip, if you click on the search “charm”, you get to the “Apps” page and this is pretty much the same as the start menu. Don’t forget it scrolls at the bottom. It is not as compact but you can get to see the almost every app they have. Some ways it’s better, it’s like having the entire start menu spread out before you.

And guess what Microsoft’s idea of an apple is? You guessed it… a lemon.

Windows 7 Pro64, 16GB RAM, SSD boot drive, GTX 570 Graphics, Vegas Pro 11 and VP10 just in case
