November 9, 2005 at 3:43 pmIm very happy to learn im not alone on this, but annoyed that this is yet another real FCP problem.
We experience this problem constantly with this one specific job that has mixed 8bit and 10bit resolutions, and the dropouts occur after the rendering of an animated channel ident bug which is over the duration of the sequence. Steering clear of 10bit seems to do the trick for now.
Ive been complaining a lot on the cow recently about final cut.
This is because we are using it on a professional level, and the pro end has been getting the short end of the stick. FCP needs to be able to properly handle rendering graphics, not to mention not lockup when you move the mouse while fast forward, etc. etc. -

November 9, 2005 at 9:15 pmI experienced the same problem with my AJA Io and found a great solution that didn’t require changing my sequence settings at all. I simply added a directional blur in the motion tab set to one pixel at 0 degrees. This way I was able to keep my sequence set to 10 bit and have a drop shadow behind my PICT file.

November 9, 2005 at 10:26 pmAll this points back to Apple’s lack of attention to true pro features that need to be fixed. One of the biggest advantages FCP has had over Avid in terms of simple features is a soft drop shadow behind any layer with an alpha. Maybe Avids can do this now, I don’t know. If you have to change your rendering settings to Fastest, or 8-bit, or RGB, the quality of the final output isn’t as good as it could be. If you have to add a 1 pixel blur, likewise.
