Why does transition on connected clip affect primary storyline clip too?

Actually, no. If you saw the edited version of my post, then you’d see I much prefer the second solution I suggested. I avoid compounding if at all possible, so as not to have to jump INTO anything to do even just simple changes.
Cheers,

You have to realize that what every NLE does is composite multiple layers of video. Whatever can be seen in the video buffer will be composited with whatever else is covering it. This is absolutely what you want to happen because it allows multiple “tracks” of video to be composited and interact as one. I would absolutely expect a Push transition to push whatever can be seen (in this case the primary storyline) off of the screen. Thats what a Push transition does (but you already know that).
Another simple solution to your problem would be to open your favorite photo editor (that would be Affinity Photo for me) and create a transparent PNG that is the same dimension as your project (e.g., 1920×1080). Then drop the transparent PNG in front of your connected clip and drop the Push transition between them. This will create a secondary storyline where the transparent image is pushing the connected clip but all you will see is the video from the main storyline sitting still just like you want because the outgoing clip is transparent and reveals what’s under it.

Which essentially works out to what I suggested… just without the step outside of FCP. ????
And btw… the size of the element would be irrelevant.

Oh yea… I missed the part where you said to set the opacity to zero on another clip. I just caught that now when I re-read it. Yes, exactly the same result. (sorry)
