June 16, 2005 at 9:28 pmI don’t know that there are any Opteron laptops… mine’s an AMD Athlon 64. If I’m doing 3D work or effects, two fans kick on, but otherwise it’s not too hot. It does warm the lap a bit, but that’s typical of any powerful laptop I think.
I don’t know why anyone would get a Pentium for video editing. My Compaq’s faster, came with more RAM, and cost way less than any other I’d seen ($1599 CDN with a 3500+ Athlon, 1 GB of RAM and a DVD+- Dual burner). I use it constantly with Premiere Pro 1.5, no problems or crashes. Also, when Windows XP64 comes along, my system will be ready, as the processor supports 64 bit. With the operating system alone, I’ll get an instant speed boost, and as the apps are ported to 64 bit, a further speed boost.

Interesting. I’m not familiar with an Athlon 64. I wonder what the differences are between that and an Opteron…
