Yeah, kinda. WIth everything being so new and pretty much not battle tested to the working public, I just expect everything to be a little busted and rough around the edges. It’ll all work out somehow. I remember the problems with the first G5s. it wasn’t the best of times either. New firmware updates were a god send. It’s just part of the process and growing pains.

On the bright side, they are admitting, though, that you can use RAM from different vendors and mix and match with Apple Ram as long as you have matching pairs from each vendor. That’s more than I have heard Apple say on using third party RAM in a Mac than I ever have in quite some time. That’s something, I guess. I think the days of ‘cheap hardware’ are pretty much over, or getting close to being over. It’s the cost of doing business.

Just buy it somewhere that will credit you for the 512 sticks. Or eBay, I guess.

    David,

when you did your full flush and fill, did you just use software update or did you go to the Apple downloads page and download all the updates? I’m asking as I have my Universal Discs for my old dual 2.0 G5 and want to completely re-install from scratch. This includes a whole new hard drive and 10.4.7+ updates that will be installed as well. Any pointers or tips appreciated.

    Andy,

You’ll need to install the OS first and its latest updates. Then install FCP from the 5.1 crossgrade discsand let Apple detect and update FCP to 5.1.2.

    Does that answer you question?

    Good luck,

[David Roth Weiss] “Does that answer you question?”

Thanks for the reply. Did you use the software update vs. downloading the updates from the apple/download page? I have read certain updates through software update seem to be corrupt and give installers headaches. Since you recently did a complete ground up re-install, I was just wondering which way you did it.

    Andy,

I simply used the software update and had no problems whatsoever. However, I always clone my system hard drive before installing any updates, that way I can go back to a good working system if I encounter any problems. That comes from learning the hard way. Thats the best tip I can offer…
