What are the most cost effective RAID-5 options?

That’s what we have in our enclosures. 1TB Hitachi drives, 16 of them. Been running I guess 4 months now and so far so good.

For cheap enclosures, check out Addonics and Norco (google them).

You can also get good prices on enclosures from pc-pitstop.com. You’ll notice that they sell enclosures identical to the burly boxes for around half the price.

I just got the LaCie Biggest Quadra, which is a 4 drive array with eSata, FW800 & 400. RAID 5, 0, 0&1, 5plusSpare optional configs. It is almost half the price of whatever RAID5 solution I was able to find, here in Europe under 1200,- for the 2TB version, including the PCI-E card. In the US prices are often much better.

The good news for those of us trying to squeeze another year of use out of our “obsolete” G5s is that Areca’s 11xx series controllers are Mac compatible. Areca has Mac drivers posted on their site, and the brochure lists Mac support as well. These cards support RAID 3, 5 & 6.
The bad news is that they ain’t cheap. They start at around $350 for an 1110, which supports 4 drives.
