I am a loyal customer who has come to expect that Apple figures this kind of shit out before they release a new OS or app. I could put up with a 1-5% hiccup as you mentioned, but not this kind of total failure.”
Hi,
First of all its not realistic to expect Apple to solve all of these problems before new software is released. No matter how much testing they do its a drop in the bucket to the “testing” done by thousands of customers.
Second of all these kinds of computer problems are not exclusive to Apple. These kinds of problems are very common with complex Video Editing SW systems. You should plan your upgrades so that if there is a problem you have a way to resolve the problems without taking a big hit. I am also planning to install Tiger and FCP Studio on a new drive. Then if something doesn’t work I only need to reboot. Avoiding burning your bridges behind you is not rocket science.
Best Wishes,
Mitch

I find this type of banter quite amusing. When did a computer become a toaster? Do any of you realize how complex a computer and it’;s operating system actually IS?
We have become complacent that we have computers more powerful that the government had 10 years ago and we are supposedly able to slide in a disc and do what ever at it had BETTER be right or something is wrong with the manufacturer of the computer or company.
Well, it may surprise you to know that people who write this code known as an operating system or an app, use the very latest hardware and really don’t care to test it on every system that company ever shipped.
The government had IT guys to make sure their computers ran non stop but you only have yourself to blame. Learn how to maintain, upgrade and repair your own computer and things will magically work much better.

May 23, 2005 at 4:39 amMarco’s suggestion to use the second SATA bay for an “ease into it” solution running Tiger and FCP 5 is exactly what I’ve done. I stll have a 10.3.8 system running 4.5… But I’m finding bugs in 5 and sending them to apple for their perusal. Yeah it sounds like beta testing and from a point of view it is. But the grass isn’t greener anywhere guys. I’ve been running NLE’s since there was NLE’s and it’s never been different.
That said, no one is putting thumbscrews on you to get you to buy the latest software when it comes out. YOU make that choice. When you run on the bleeding edge, you bleed… always have a backup plan… and never leave your working system completely away from you. Chris you should have know better… I’m sorry to hear of your problems, but also feel that you were unlucky in the install, and suggest that if you had reinstalled you may have come up with a better start. I did… so why not you? Bad luck came into play here somewhat I think.

Jerry is right. FCP5.0/Tiger is a classic early version release to stay away from if you can. New software on a new operating system…Danger Will Robinson!!! I will certainly do the upgrade and maybe add another suite (take the place of the old Avid), but I will watch from the sidelines for a while and watch the ‘bleeding edgers’ figure it out and de-bug.

I’m with Marco here, I cannot believe how many of you just jump into the new App ( on 10.3.9 which everyone universally says sucks) or the Tiger / fcp5 combo ( IMHO is 300% more stable than 10.3.9) in the middle of a project.
He and I stay on the bleeding edge of this stuff and neither of us are willing to scarify our livelihoods on unproven software.
I too am of the have a second drive cloned and use it to test on.
Everyone is having problems, I found that all of the 3 party drivers responded better when I reinstalled them when working on my Tiger / 5 machine that was just upgraded — this was especially true with the DVCPROHD components for the Panasonic 1200a deck, QT 7 ignored the pieces from the previous OS. Once I reinstalled everything was fine.gary

May 23, 2005 at 7:53 pmChris,
How dare you listen to Apple’s marketing! Who really expects a company to test the “most advanced computer operating system” before it is released? Furthermore, you should have gone out and purchased a used engineer before considering an upgrade. It really is your fault. Why do you think it’s called tiger? Because it mauls you! Consider the OS discs flat, pretty, round, grenades and your advanced computer a helpless little kitten completely incapable of protecting itself from a devestanging blast.
Perhaps the OS should come with an engineer named Harry and a backup drive in the box.
All joking aside, I’m with you. I think you’re right to be pissed. With all that marketing you’d think somebody would have done a thorough install on a few systems before they released. It’s not like with windows/ibm systems that have dozens of pc manufacturers realeasing 20 different versions of every pc. Apple is the only company that makes macs. They know what Macs they’ve made and there aren’t THAT many versions out there to test.
I will say though, I decided to wait a few weeks before making the FCP5 jump just for the reasons mentioned in other posts on this string. Don’t wanan get cut by that bleeding edge.
Bring on the 400 comments about me being unfair to Apple….

May 23, 2005 at 9:45 pmGood point, all software especially from Apple SHOULD work perfectly straight out the box on a .0 version, no bugs, no problems but it doesn’t, no software does. The public beta test every single piece of software released on the planet!
