  • well….Vegas 6 has not fixed render to mpeg 2 problem

Posted by Yoyodyne on April 21, 2005 at 6:05 am

I had my hopes up but…alas…mpeg 2 is still busted on my editing machine with Vegas 6 (havent tried on my laptop yet). I can now render to m2t, which is nice, but I have to get to the bottom of this mpeg 2 thing. I’ve uninstalled all Sound forge and Sony stuff off my machine and cleaned out the registry. gonna installl just V6 and see what happens…

I don’t believe this! I just spent 4 extra (!) days working and cursing around this problem and keeping the client of my back, desperately wishing that 6.0 would no longer have this problem created by the 5.0d update. This means I should simply not upgrade to 6.0, but downgrade to 5.0b. What’s going on here Sony? I simply have to compress to MPEG2.

It seems there are only THREE of us are having problems. I have still have not downloaded V6 because I did not think the prob would be fixed.
Even if it was fixed in V6.0a Yoyodyne, what are the odds on having same prob appearing with V6.0b or c!!

I am seriously considering reverting from 5.0d to 5.oa as that was the most stable version for me.

I might download DVDA3 to see if the menu text has improved from DVDA2.
I still use DVD workshop becuse menu text is flicker free compared to DVDA2.

Yep – this mpeg 2 thing blows pretty bad…It does look like we are the only 3 with this specific problem – but it looks like some others are having trouble rendering anything in V6…. Of course this doesn’t do anything to solve the problem…

Except for the mpeg 2 thing Vegas 6 has worked great for me – but of course mpeg 2 is pretty figgin’ important! Well see what a clean re-install of XP does – this is pretty painful though, windows update is just torture – thank god for DSL!

That problem suggests to me that V6 has the same MPEG2 rendering engine as V5.0d
I do not know whether this applies to you but I was doing some MPEG2 tests yeserday, checking the render settings between V4, V5.0b and V5.0d
One of the settings in V5 is different to V4. This under Sytem tab on render settings. Audio buffer size is set at 4Kb in V4 but zero in V5. You cannot change it.There again, this may be a red herring.

The main thing I found is that I can render MPEG2 successfully if I render VBR. I didnot notice this because I always render CBR.
So it cannot be my PC system that’s faulty. CAN IT?

Sorry you guys are still having this problem.

Just a thought – if you input .avis into DVDA, does the MPEG2 rendering work then?

Thanks for the CBR/VBR tip Mehash – interesting, I’ll see how things go here and give it a try. Well, got XP re-installed with all the latest drivers for everything (and about an hours worth of security updates) & have discovered an incredibly irritating problem, my dual head video card won’t detect my second monitor! WTF!

I’m using an old dualhead Nvidia geforce2 mx card (it’s old but has always worked fine) & it won’t detect my second CRT monitor. If I plug an lcd monitor in it sees it just fine & I can use the dual head feature. I can even unplug the vga cable from the lcd and plug it into the crt and it works – but it wont see the CRT on bootup.

Going to bed now – test tommorrow

    That’s an interesting thought Peter.
I do not use DVDA2 and prefer to use DVD Workshop. This is purely personal and subjective assessment but I find interlace flicker on menu-text unacceptable. DVDW has anti interlace flicker filter which works well.

I just fired up DVDA and it’s rendering a 7 GB file. I can not find an option to specify CBR/VBR encoding.
    Is there one?

DVDA2 doesn’t have as many encoding options as Vegas, particularly 2 pass encoding, but I see DVDA3 has Interlace Flicker removal.

My suggestion was more to see if encoding MPEG2 worked ouside Vegas. I guess if it did, that would make it even more mysterious why not inside Vegas …

Thanks Peter. Anti interlace filter will definitely encourage me to test out DVDA3.

As I mentioned, V5.0d DOES render MPEG2 in VBR. It crashes if CBR is selected.
I suspect DVDA2 uses VBR. I dragged a 7GB file in the menu window and set the bit rate at 6Mb/s. It’s still rendering and I suspect it will render to the end.
