    If it means anything…

AJA, far and away, has the best tech support ever. Period. From a reseller perspective, we sell thousands of AJA products annually, and in addition to the product quality & warranty, the support is the #1 thing we push. It’s scary how good my experience has been with AJA support. Hundreds of phone calls over the years, not a bad one among the bunch. They call you back if you leave a message, and they understand WORKFLOW, not just troubleshooting if the device is defective or not (and where the blame lies).

    Huge endorsement, Nick & AJA.

You need to find your way thru the standard robot choices and will end up at what sounds like a call center in India, but the guy I spoke to knew his stuff!

    Bob,

I’ve been contemplating, wondering, dreaming, reading, twittering, etc…on whether to transition to Adobe Premiere Pro or Avid Media Composer. Support after the sale is very important to me but not at a cost($200) as you mentioned. I think this one post has just convinced me to go with Adobe Premiere Pro!

Before you do that let me fill you in on the support costs…
First with every MC bought you get a service access code to use when calling into our hot line to get help. If you need ongoing support you can either buy support for a year whinch includes phone support and software updates – the prices range from $99 for academic to $2495 for a high end MC with Nitris DX and a bunches of prices in between.

If you dont want to go that route – especially if you have been around the Avid before, then you can bnuy individual codes to call in or you can just opt to connect with us on the Community.avid.com site. There are 50 customer moderators/helpers there like here on the Cow assisting plus there are a few of us Avid-ites up there all the time as well helping.

It all boils down to who is there when you NEED the help. Ask people that use each and see.

    Bob,

Each MC unit comes with a free Service Code to use if the product is registered and you need troubleshooting. However if the issue is installation, setup or SW activation related which your issue with setup seemed to be then the call is free. Always has been – you just press option 2 then option 2 again when calling and you get right through.

[Bob Zelin] “having recently installed an AJA I/O Express with Media Composer 5.5.2, I was very unhappy (as usual with AVID) about having a $200 per incident support phone call to AVID. Which of course, I did not pay. I was not going to inconvenience my friends at AJA to do something that should not be done (support for AVID problems), and so I received my FREE answer from the AVID forum on Creative Cow.”

I remember when I was an Avid DS editor the Tech Support Service fee was $6000 a year. When the economy went south I was told that we wouldnt be purchasing the service contract. I imagine some of my bad feelings about Avid was being on my own during some crisis situations.

    Tom,

Thats too bad had I wish you knew of not only the DS forum on community.avid.com and the DS List where a laundry list of DS editors live and help. Sylvain the product Champ for the DS is also on there all the time. As for MC – there are 3 forums now for that and forums for most other products. I want to say the past is the past but you need to experience the good before you will believe again.

I want to second that. It’s nice to see a company step up and take a chance on trusting their customers with information on future plans.
