Windows XP 32bit can take advantage of 2.75gig ram by default Windows Vista 32bit recognize 3326 MB around 3.25gig
After Effect will perform much better Under Vista 32bit with 4gig of RAM it will allow AE to use 2gig of RAM (just for AE) and the operating system and other open Program utilize the reminder
Further more if you enable in the preferences Multiprocessing and YOU HAVE additional processor AE will take advantage of more than 2gig of RAM while rendering (it is actually running 2 copies of AE simultaneously.
And under Vista 64bit with Quad-Core Intel -

October 23, 2007 at 2:35 pmWhile the information in your post is techincally true, there is the matter of efficiency. The fact that Windows XP can utilize memory above 1GB whhen the /3GB switch is enabled does not mean that it does so well.
My experience shows a quad machine with 4GB of memory to be very slow with Windows XP 32bit and CS2 and much faster when upgrading to CS3 but not as blazingly fast as it should be and that it of course is under 64-bit.
I am waiting for an Avid version supporting Vista before upgrading. It is some time in the future though as Avid are waiting for SP1 (due in Q1, now in beta) and then some 🙂
