Videos always look bad on YouTube

…and do you feel this is better than the other? To me it looks a bit smoother. (you are watching in 1080p yes? because it doesn’t default to that, it defaults to 360p unless you change it)

I stopped the video to see a frame several times and they look pretty clear to me at 1080p given all the action that’s going on.

He is using a capture card, but I know the guy and he was getting the exact same quality with Dxtory and x264 format. My 1080p is not even close to 720p.. it’s terribly bad. You can see at the bottom left how the tickets (the numbers) are fading away.. everything is just very ugly and in action with 64 players it will be chaos

I’ve uploaded many dozens of videos to YouTube, with rarely a problem. Though with a few animations I did, I had some issues. There was a time when video gaming was more like animation, today I suspect the results aren’t that different than live shots in this respect, but it’s something to check. I usually render to Sony or MainConcept AVC, at 6Mb/s or so for 720p, a bit more for 1080p, but there’s only so much quality YouTube will support.

Here’s the first question: what frame rate are you capturing (if you mentioned, I missed it)? Given that most gaming is on monitors, any chance you’re recording 60p? YouTube will down-convert your video to 30p or maybe even 24p (check to see what you’re getting)… this was the problem I was having a year so ago with some of my animations. The combination of frame rate conversion and a lowered bitrate can really screw with fast motion. I solved it in the animation by re-rendering at 24p and controlling the motion blur myself. Not necessarily an option in your case, but do check to see if you’re being downconverted on frame rate.

If so, try rendering to that frame rate, and see how it looks prior to upload. You can control the conversion Vegas does a bit via built-ins, a bit more via some plug-ins. But the key is to be aware if this is happening.

Ok. You have rendered a video with Sony AVC at 1080p, at a high bitrate, with the default settings for “Internet HD 1080p” which I seem to recall is 8mpbs. And before you uploaded to YouTube you run this MP4 file with any ordinary player such as Windows Media Player or VLC media player. And it looks great.

OK then I think your codecs are screwed up because they’re showing you something that YouTube’s converters are not seeing. Hope you don’t have to reinstall Windows LOL! You could reinstall Vegas pretty easy. How bout you render a test clip and send it to your friend and see if it looks good on his computer, and then he sends it up to YouTube?

I rendered a video and sent it to my friend and asked him to upload the video.. still looks bad (once uploaded.. it looks good on his computer and on my computer). So I think it has something to do with my computer (codecs or something)

Only thing I have changed since I made this video is the graphics cards (from ATI 5970’s to NVIDIA GTX 580’s)

Could it be the GPU’s? I installed this Windows 2 weeks ago… it’s basically new.

This is something really small and simple and it’s completely stopping me from making videos..
