Vegas 8 really slow

Sony Vegas renders very slow for me when other software renders it in seconds.

I did a render test with a 19sec video and here are my results:

H M S
00:00:00

Sony Vegas Pro 8: 00:02:12 MPEG2

Windows Movie Maker: 00:00:45 WMV

Cyberlink Power Director Express: 00:00:16 MPEG2

now can somebody explain how a free software from my camera can render the video much faster than a very expensive video editing software?

nothing was done to the video just a plain mpeg2 video from my camera that was used for the test

You can’t do a render test to different formats and compare the results. That’s not a fair test. Rendering to MPEG-2 and WMV are very different things.

Sure. Perhaps the free software wasn’t rendering at all. If nothing was done to the video it as probably smart enough to know this and simply copy the input file to an output file. So what you tested was how fast your hard drive can copy a file.

What camera? What MPEG-2 format? Did you render to the same exact format in Vegas? As I said, if you asked Vegas to convert from one MPEG2 format to another it has to analyze each and every frame and make the conversion. If you asked your camera software to render to the same format, it will just copy the frames with no conversion.

yes the wmv was a bad test.

they both did a widescreen .MOD to .MPEG2 (.MOD: Video: around 9Mbps. Audio: AC3 (dolby digital) to MPEG2: Video: default export quality. Audio: MPEG 224kbps)

iv edited video on the software that came with the camera and it did it in a about few seconds to a minute longer ( if the video is long) than the length of the actual video.

the camera is a JVC Everio GZ-MG330 30GB HDD

but vegas would take like 6x or longer to do what the free software did.

vegas has a lot of cool features but it takes forever to render a video file.

i seen a video on youtube of a guy explaining how to export HD video for youtube he said it would take 17 minutes per every minute of video… WHAT!!!??? i dont know if he has a dated computer but still..

Unless you created a custom render template in Vegas to the exact specs of the MOD file, this would explain why Vegas had to take longer to process each and every frame to a different spec. You are rendering to two different specifications (JVC 9Mbps MPEG2 vs Vegas 6Mbps MPEG2) and cannot compare the times.
