    Oops, forgot to go on,

[Bruce Quayle] “However I do need to be able to produce DVDs on location as will as have the ability to upload video to the internet occasionally. I believe that Vegas should be able to do this for me.”

    Yes

[Bruce Quayle] “So perhaps I need to keep the drives separate and use one for the programs and the other for the media. Do you think that this would work?”

    Yes

[Bruce Quayle] “I gather that 7200rpm drives are essential, correct?”

No, not essential. I think that 5200 speed drives should work fine, particularly for cut editing. You might have some dropped frames during complex transitions with multiple audio tracks, but that’s no big deal since you can render trouble spots when necessary, but…, I hope others with more experience will chime in here.

Well I didn’t have any luck last night with the test I did. I made a simple .VEG file, saved as Avid legacy aaf, put the aaf file in the same folder as the media but Media composer wouldn’t open it. It said could not open a file but asked if I’d like to try anyway. I clicked yes and the time line looked as if it worked, audio and video in the proper tracks and in the same time as I had in Vegas but the media was offline. I tried to re-link but it wouldn’t. I tried with the other aaf option with embedded media checked but I had the same results. If i get more time to play with it I will but for now I’m unsuccessful. I’ll monitor this post for further details. Danny Hays

    Danny,

[Danny Hays] “Well I didn’t have any luck last night with the test I did.”

Well…, Poop! Excuse my French, but this is pretty much a buzzard in the ointment. Leave it to grand dad to to play well only with himself. Perhaps you’ll figure a way to link up the files with the timeline. Did the Avid timeline show the correct source timecodes for the clips?

    Thanks for your time Ron.
The “field” I talk about will be (unfortunately) one of the more unforgiving environments for electronics – the ocean. I have a small boat and will be shorthanded on (video) crew. I can produce enough power to maintain all systems indefinitely, but have to be careful. My experience with the EX1 is nil. My biggest plus card is that I am funding the series myself and therefore control the schedule. I already have two backup computers. Can’t aford a backup camera. But I have serious protection for the camera.
    Thanks for all your advice.
    Cheers, Bruce
