  • Using Credit Roll as a Teleprompter

This may not be possible, but what I’m trying to achieve is having Vegas’ Credit Roll scroll my monologue while viewing myself on that same TV. So that I can make sure I’m centered in the frame, and be looking directly into the camera, which is front of the TV. Behind me is a large green screen. So to clear, what I’d like to see on the TV, is a green screen behind me, myself looking directly into the camera and have the Credit Roll scrolling my dialogue. Can anyone think of a way to do this? The camera would record via remote control, so I don’t think I need a capture card. But I can’t figure out how to teleprompt on to “Live” footage. I know I can do all these things in Post-Production, but that is not what I want to do. If this is possible to do in newer versions of Vegas, I will definitely upgrade. Thanks for any and all advice offered.

Hey there! I have used OBS to do something similar, and I think this might apply to you since Vegas doesn’t do live keying well.
It should be a simple setup:
-Set Up a Scene in OBS

-Add your camera feed as a Video Source.
-Add a green background behind yourself (you don’t need to key it out yet).
-Add your Credit Roll as a scrolling text overlay (OBS supports this natively).
-Use OBS as a Live Monitor
-Output OBS to your external TV.
-Look at the TV while recording with your separate camera.
-Record Separately or Use Virtual Camera
You can either record within OBS or send the live composite to Vegas for recording if you want to edit in real-time.
    Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for your response it’s appreciated. Please excuse my ignorance, but I have no idea what OBS is?

OBS is a recording/streaming software which supports adding multiple scenes in one place. So you could connect it to your camera and your TV, making it possible to see yourself on the tv and . add rolling credits for your teleprompter.

Wow, thank you Sir!! That could be the perfect solution. I will test it and get back to you, if I have any additional questions. Once again, thank you so much!

Hi Jurgen, I’ve run into a bit of a snag. I have the newest version of OBS installed 13.0.2 but it can’t see my Sony Camcorder. It sees my Surface Pro Front and Rear Cameras but not the Sony Camcorder. I’ve tried connecting via USB 3.0 and HDMI, but it doesn’t pop up as an option. Any ideas? Do I need some kind of special adapter? If I connect the Sony Camcorder directly to my TV it sees it clearly. So, I know the cable is good. It’s a bit baffling to me.

So from my research, I’ve found I do need a Capture Card (adapter) So I ordered this one online https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0CDLH7DMK/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?pd_rd_i=B0CDLH7DMK&pd_rd_w=xlrOz&content-id=amzn1.sym.516c2169-755e-413a-a38a-68230f4ab66f&pf_rd_p=516c2169-755e-413a-a38a-68230f4ab66f&pf_rd_r=9E23238GP6NN49EW9FNG&pd_rd_wg=o1EeK&pd_rd_r=a7171698-1fd6-497e-ad99-3d9656adfe88&s=electronics&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9kZXRhaWw&th=1 I saw this guy’s video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar87pSwO1kM&t=107s and it seems quite straight forward. So, I’m left with only two questions. Can I use that adapter and stream “Live” camera into Vegas, and scroll the monologue with Transparent Credit Roll. OR……failing that, how do I load the transparent credit roll I rendered out of Vegas and load it into OBS? The second option being my preferred method. Or can you create credit rolls, right inside of OBS?

That’s a good idea! The adapter should do the job. As for the rolling text, you can create it on obs itself. It would take a long time to write it step by step, so I’m sending this tutorial I found:

That tutorial definitely helps! The missing piece of the puzzle. And I can probably cut and paste from my text file, to speed up the process. But what about my question about importing an mp4 (transparent credit roll) from a Vegas Render. Is that importable into OBS….as a second option, instead of creating scrolling text in OBS?

Of course! You can do so by adding a media scene, then choosing the desired path for your video. Just make sure to insert the mp4 then move that layer on top of everything else (just like in Vegas)

There is a lot more you can do with OBS. Definitely a useful tool for recording!
