December 15, 2019 at 12:40 pmYou’d have a lot more choices and probably save lots of money if you switch to Windows and Nvidia. Resolve likes Cuda, and you have the ongoing advantage of incremental updates.

December 21, 2019 at 12:04 amYou can upgrade your card to an Nvidia 4000 with 2gb GPU but I do’t think you can get much more GPU memory in that machine. Also increasing your RAM and putting in a SSD replacement hard drive and a SSD to use asa a fast cache drive will help a lot. I did this a while back on a similar machine and the increase was impressive.
Keep in mind that Adobe manages RAM on a per thread basis so the amount of RAM you have would only use about 1/2 of your CPU power in HD when using Adobe.. Even less in higher resolutions.

December 21, 2019 at 4:24 pmI recently upgraded to a new iMac with 8 GB Video Memory. I work with Resolve 16 Studio which needs (>= 8GB Video memory) but it works really great. If you can add the interface needed for the BMD video eGPU ok, but then for $2000 you can get an iMac………
Cheers

December 30, 2019 at 12:27 pmHi folks,
1. Keep the set up and save the money until you have more to spent on a new mac (ImacPro) for more CPU Power. Your mac is on high sierra, so okay.
2. Instead of more CPU Power you can invest money in a new Raid, which will be also okay with a new mac in the future.
I wouldn’t go for a eGPU.
A new computer will give you enough power to operate without eGPU.
I would not invest in an old system.cheers

January 4, 2020 at 6:17 pmI’m in the Facebook group MacPro 5,1. There you will find all the help and answers you need. Using the Mojave FW update you can boot off NVME (very fast) and add an RX580 8 GB GPU with you stock power supply. I’d avoid a TB3 expansion card unless they OK it and there could be sleep issues. I alway thought eGPU was a backwards solution for laptops and since you have PCIe, that is your best bet. YMMV.

January 6, 2020 at 7:31 amThanks Phillip!
I just did some research on your suggestions, and it looks like the right path for me.
I also posted in the MacPro 5,1 FB group, just to get any final input.
Thanks again!
