[Shane Ross] “Are we going to need to do a Terranex session for this, or is this something the Kona 3 or LH can handle? I know the Kona 3 can upconvert, but can I adjust framing with that, or does it just default to a center extraction that is cropped?”

I have both, and the difference between the upconvert on my Kona 3 and a Terranex Mini unit ( w/o the noise reduction) were undistinguishable to me on a scope or to my eyes.

however if you are working on a big terranex (rack mount) with noise reduction, image enhance and image restore functions, it wins hands down, as it should, being upwards of a 50X-70X more expensive than my Kona 3 card.

But you better have deep pockets to work on one of these 6 figure boxes. Most places I know of want between $400-600 an hour for conversion from SD and charge extra from VHS.

Bart: We are working with Varicam footage, which is 59.94 on tape, and pulldown removed to get us 23.98.

Kevin: That ESPN idea looks great, and I will pitch it. Walter was nice enough to send me footage that was DV upconverted to DVCPRO HD and sent a couple stills showing what you are talking about. This looks great, and I will pitch it to my producer. But I like it a lot.

    Walter: Thank you very much.

David: ROTFLMAO. When you first posted that I thought you were kidding, but it turns out you didn’t know it was me who posted that. Too funny. Unfortunately we have a VERY short delivery on this show and cannot afford the render time that those droplets require. Although I do have 3 G5s….hmmmm….

Gary: Yes, we were going to do a LARGE Terranex session. But now with the suggestion these kind folks gave me, I think I will be pitching this idea to the producer, then buying a Mac Pro and Kona 3…my wife will hate me.

So the “upconversion” from NTSC to 720p isn’t your only issue. You also have a framerate problem. Is there any specific reason you must edit at 23.98 ?

One of the things we do here is pretty much edit everything at 59.94 no matter how it’s shot. 24, 30, 59.94, it’s all going to broadcast so for me it’s just easier to stay in the 29.97 frame rate workspace.

    Because we deliver a 1080p 23.98 master.

But hmmm….that is something I need to test too…

    Hey Shane,

Please let me know how you end up attacking this and the quality of the results. I have a Mac Pro and Kona 3 and the picture looks great but the frame rate issue is still a bit of an issue. I’ve had the best results with the Kona and Nattress Format converter though it still isn’t “great”. Must admit that I’ve solved a lot of it with projection and reshooting in HD and it’s a great artist look as well.

I will be keeping note of what we do on my blog at http://www.lfhd.net. I tend to outline workflows I tried and successes I have had.

Well, I just showed this to the other editor and to the producer. While we think it is cool, it doesn’t suit our story. And the fact that we will have 50% of our footage as DV, beta and VHS archive (VHS all dubbed to DV) and very little time to even think about this, we will most likely have a Terranex session. We editors need to put all our efforts in the creative aspect of this, and don’t have time to monkey around…so the Post Super will be handling this most likely…although we’ll prep which footage is to be top extracted, which is to be center extracted and which is to be bottom.

    I’ll keep you posted.
