March 10, 2012 at 4:12 pmWhen I render it to 1080p, the black bars are exactly shown like in the preview…

March 10, 2012 at 4:59 pmIndeed, that will set the cropping height to 1113px and remove the black bars, but the image is still cropped. I just don’t get the behavior of the cropping window: why do black bars show up when the cropping height is anywhere below 1113px? The project setting is 1080px so I should be able to crop the height until 1080px without any black bars…

Yes, that’s absolutely correct. I’m trying to figure out why the image you posted looks the way it does because the crop seems correct but the preview is wrong. This is not the way it’s supposed to be. it’s supposed to be exactly as you explained. A 1080 height project should match out aspect to 1080 without any black bars.
Can you post the .veg file and a single image and I’ll look at see if I can figure out what’s going wrong?

Found it! 🙂
Open your Project Properties and UNCHECK:
[_] Adjust source media to better match project or render settings.
This is what’s messing you up. That’s the first thing I disable after I install Vegas Pro and then use Start all projects with these settings to make sure it stays off.
It is a relatively new option that is normally useful if you just want to drop a bunch of media that does not match the project aspect and have Vegas “guess” at what to do but it can become a problem when you want to do your own cropping.
