Trimmer usage / editing workflow techniques… what’s yours?

I agree peter.
Although I organize the physical files in the explorer but also use the media tab so I can see the first frame.
Probably cuz I dont use the media manager

In regards to scrubbing– I highly recommend a jog wheel, i have the Bella Keyboard with a built in wheel that will go frame by frame or FF/REW to scrub. You can also purchase a “standalone” usb one.
It is essentially the same as jkl but much easier and faster in my opinion.
I would be lost without it.

Most of my projects are edited linear, but even promo videos and commercials where clips get rearranged, I still use the timeline and just move them around via cut/paste after labelling them with markers and trimming.

I guess it all boils down to the method that you started editing, or were taught, or in my case- I started long ago with pinnacle studio/movie maker where there was no trimmer, so there you have it.

I started with Pinnacle Studio as well. It was a good, simple program to start video editing with… but what a beating that program was with crashing/freezing all the time. Starting with Studio is exactly the reason I had no clue what the trimmer was used for until I finally dove in and tried it.

Thank you for the jog wheel recommendation. I will certainly look into that.

I tend to use markers in trimmer and then drop into the timeline. Like someone said earlier, I use the waveforms a lot to figure out where my talent stops talking. With larger interviews I’ll tend to use jkl in the trimmer to avoid long periods of scrubbing.

I use a shuttlepro with larger projects. It’s really handy and has the scrubber that works scookum.

I use the trimmer quite a bit during an edit.

There’s a setting in preferences for double-clicking a clip to open in the trimmer…

I usually drag through and create a loop section – I hit tab for video only, audio only, or both. Then I drag that section to the timeline and fine tune.

I wish there was a way to make markers in the trimmer – that would make things go even quicker. Mark, mark, draw loop – place.

Can the Trimmer accomplish the needed trimming tasks even though it doesn’t have its own monitor.

Needed on-screen (TOOLBAR) buttons (IF POSSIBLE):

Mark In
Mark Out
Goto In
Goto Out
Play
Play-in-to-out

Needed keyboard keys:

Mark In
Mark Out
Goto In
Goto Out
Play
Play-in-to-out

Also needed:

Drag Out point
Drag Out-point

After a clip is trimmed, only the the duration between In and Out should remain. This requires:

Set new poster/picon frame (see below)

Toolbar button and/or keyboard to reset trimmed clip to original captured length.

There needs to be a TC for the Trimmer seperate from the Timeline.

There needs to be a DURATION readout that displays the time between the In and Out points.

Most of all THERE NEEDS TO BE A SLIDER THAT LETS ONE SCROLL THROUGH A SOURCE CLIP.

Do all these functions exist in the Trimmer?

AND, how do you get picons/thumbnails to show-up in the Bin window?

AND, how do you get clip names to show-up on clips in the Timeline window?

I’ve been using the trimmer a lot on a docu recently, with loads of studio talking heads discussing events occuring on location. I set the I/O points for a clip, set it as a Region (or sometimes just use a Marker), save it and use A to get it on the timeline.

the advantage of this is the clips have their region/marker content visible within the clip, separate from any regions / markers inserted on the timeline. Makes it much easier to identify a clip, esp when the video is often so similar.
Then I can always go back to original clip in trimmer by right clicking it and opening trimmer, to find exact location specified by (eg) a region, within its context, if I need to check content.
