March 9, 2009 at 11:46 amHi Gary
You seem like a clever guy, im in South Africa and working in a pal eviroment.
Im trying to capture varicam footage from my AJ1200 deck via my Black magic Decklink HD extreme card to FCP studio 2, OK sooo.
My Deck is set to 25fps as in 25 HD and there is diffrent frame rates on one tape ..like 25, 50 and 60 fps on one tape so i can capture the 25fps footage but when i try to capture 50fps is just captures it as 25fps and i am unable to convert the clips. What do i need to do to capture 60 or 50 fps footage as they are and convert them afterwards.
Sequence Preset : Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 50 – 8bit
Capture Preset is : Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 50 – 8bit
Device contol preset : Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 50.And this is about the only preset which the deck recognizes and captured with.
Ive read a whole bunch of stuff on this matter and have tried diffrent combinations and they all make sense but the deck dont seem to see it. So this is the only preset i can use unless its a settting on the deck but as far as i know the deck is set to auto and tells my thru the user bit character which frame it is, but like i say my fcp just captures it all at 25 but then i cant convert. -

March 9, 2009 at 12:11 pmHave a look if they are really captured as p25.
Import to FC and check them as “Upper-first” in the Browser.
See how the work in a i50 sequence.

Im not sure how to check that, but im pretty sure it is 25fps coz it says so on the deck itself (on userbit) is tells you the frame rate. But coz its a varicam it could be 25/60 or 25/50 im not sure.
My sequence setting is
Frame Size 1920×1080 HDTV 1080i(16:9)
Pixel aspect ratio : Square
Field Dominance Upper (odd)
Editing timebase 25Compressor : uncompressed 8-bit

March 9, 2009 at 12:58 pmHi Ewald,
I know almost nothing about Varican but what i propose you is not harmful at all.
In the Browser there is a column “Field Dominance”.
Change one of the clips to “Upper-first” and drag it to your i50 sequence.
Put your Canvas at 100%. and play your clip and step frame by frame.
i think that you will get an idea of the real time base of your clip.

OK — but why hijack an Sony SxS thread for a varicam issue?
“My Deck is set to 25fps as in 25 HD and there is diffrent frame rates on one tape ..like 25, 50 and 60 fps on one tape so i can capture the 25fps footage but when i try to capture 50fps is just captures it as 25fps and i am unable to convert the clips.”
Let me say that I gave up on the BMD cards for varicam captures about 2004, but from what you are saying this is capturing all the footage at 25p, which is correct for your timeline, is it not?
you do not say if the footage is being handled as overcranked after capture?if you have need to extract the footage as both, you will need to capture as DVCPROHD at 720p60 and allow the FRC plug in to handle the frame rate extraction for the 25p materials.
Note there is a Varicam forum that I moderate also.
