April 20, 2005 at 2:28 pmWrong, wrong, wrong. It’s not writing 100 mb/sec to tape in any sense. It’s just recording the same 25 mb/sec signal to dv tape faser. It’s also not passing the signal over firewire. QSDI is a compressed form of SDI signal proprietary to Sony used in their editing stations. Why do I know this? Because I own a DSR-85 complete with QSDI board- it weighs about 60 pounds and is a big as a washing machine.

If you use Sony’s editstation with it you can read tapes 4x speed through QSDI.
If you have two of those decks, you can DUB tapes with 4x speed, so then it’s
reading _and_ writing 4x speed through QSDI. -

April 20, 2005 at 8:25 pmWe discussed this earlier. It’s a DVCAM deck that does 4x ingest and record over SDTI for ENG use. It’s about $20k and would be way too bulky for a camcorder mechanism.
So yes, it’s possible, but no, it’s not practical.

April 20, 2005 at 8:26 pmThe deck we know of was DVCAM not DV, and it’s very expensive. I have no idea on it’s reliability. This is really a dead end, as we know DV tape is never going to be totally reliable and I hestiate to think what it would do at 4x – and even still that’s what, 15mins of HD on a tape. You’re back to short record times again. P2 really is the right solution methinks.

April 20, 2005 at 10:21 pmMiniDVCAM tape casette is physically identical to miniDV.
I originally took this deck for an example, when this phrase “miniDV can’t handle more than 25Mbps”
was took as a somekind of law of nature in these boards.
DSR-85 was bulky, expensive and had 14 heads, but it was done five years ago.
This clearly shows that it would have been easy to develop miniDV mechanism from 25Mbps to at least 40Mbps,
what 720p24 needs.
In five years CPU speeds, hdd sizes, data tape storage sizes and everything else has grown at least 400%.
MiniDV tech has been frozen for a decade, mainly because AV manufacturers have consentrated themselves
to make same old stuff cheaper with still the same just acceptable quality. -

April 20, 2005 at 10:26 pmNope. It’s still laying down a 25 mb/sec signal to those tapes. The QSDI might be moving 100 mb/sec, but that’s got nothing to do with to data rate that’s actually being laid down to tape.
Now, it is possible to speed up tapes and record a fatter signal, but not with mini dv tape. You can do it with dvcpro tape, but it’s thicker, has a differnt metal oxide, and won’t fit in small cassettes. Also, you need a huge, sturdy tape transport to do that- something like what the varicam has. If you want this camerta to be cheap and small, you’re going to have to accept compromises.

Because it does and that means 100Mbps.

Please, stop writing and refer to everyone else’s posts to see where you’re making your mistakes.
