The same as it ever was….
Posted by Marc Brewer on May 23, 2005 at 10:28 pmSo I’ve done all the things mentioned here. I know everyone says this gets posted all the time but nothing has help my text look professional. It’s readable but pixelized…

May 23, 2005 at 10:42 pmFirst of all:
Do a thorough search on tgis topic. There are tons more of things you can do to reduce jittering (like adding a blur for instance). And on the ‘even’ lines topic:
Interlaced video only gives pretty nice titles if you make sure that the titles move up exactly 2 lines per frame (or 4 or 8 or x*2). That’s NOT the same as just making sure that you only enter even numbers.
In order to have a proper roll on a PAL project (25 fps) you can move a rolltitle:
4 lines per frame *
25 fps *
duration of 10 seconds (for instance) = 4 * 25 * 10 = 1000.So the y-value in the first frame must be -500.
The y-value in the last frame (10 sec’s later) must be +500.Only then you get rid of the whobbeling/floating effect in your text.
But still the edges can look pixelated from a bad render. (but they will have the same pixelation in every frame). This is where you can add some blur to smoothen the edges.
Also it’s good not to use pure white, but 90% or so.Hope this helps

May 24, 2005 at 12:02 amThanks a ton for your reply!
I really appreciate it. My searches really don’t turn up but a few posts and they all say pretty much the same thing. I got better results from the first and cheapest Media100 10 years ago!I’ll take that all into account but all I’m doing is scaling up from 75% to 100 percent. Then I have a lower third just sitting there. They all have the same pixelized look.
another spot has the text moving from outter screen to the middle and so on. I just can’t believe for something this simple there are all these “formulas”. It just doesn’t make sense…. but here we all are…what do you do about the even number thing when you scale up? somewhere in there it will have to fall on odd number lines…..
Thanks again,
anyone else have any suggestions?

May 24, 2005 at 12:05 amI’ve found that when adding Title3D text, if you only position and scale the text using the CONTROL tab, it should look fine. DO NOT adjust the text using the MOTION tab as this will most likely cause ghosting on your titles. I believe this is becuase FCP 4.5 does NOT perform sub-pixel rendering like AE does.
That being said, you can adjust your title position using the motion tab, but your vertical position has to be on an even (or odd, i forgot which) line.
I have to fix titles ALL the time when I go from OFFLINE (470 vertical resolution) to ONLINE (486 vertical resolution). Usually titles will look good one or the other have have to be adjusted up or down one pixel at a time.

May 24, 2005 at 12:11 amSorry,
Just understood that you were talking about title rolls. Obviously you didn’t. So forget about the calculations (or actually: don’t forget it, remember it for another time).
About scaling:
Do I understand you correctly that you create a title and then scale it down with the Motion Tab? Why do you do so? That will give bad results. (no subpixels). Just take a smaller fontsize in Title 3d I’d say, but maybe I’m missing the point again…Rienk

May 24, 2005 at 12:46 amNow you may be onto something….
say you were going to create a graphic of 2 words….like
sleep interruptions.
how would you go about it? I just started manipulating the first values I saw under title 3D tab. Is this the wrong place to do a simple scale up or move text accross the screen?…….
thanks R!
I think I’m just very frustrated at this point….MB

May 24, 2005 at 1:38 amThanks Kevin,
Yeah I was doing everything scaling, position etc from the control tab. No options in the other one. It doesn’t look like it does sub pixel rendering. I never have this trouble with AE. Funny thing is I can take a clip rendered in AE, import it and the text still looks about the same…Could I have some bad fonts or something?
I’m using futura, nuttin special right?

May 24, 2005 at 1:56 amYou are viewing this on an NTSC or PAL video monitor, correct? The Canvas will display text at half-res because on an interlaced monitor it looks fine.

May 24, 2005 at 2:02 amThanks Sean,
Yes, I’m looking at the composite output from a Sony DSR 40 deck, Sony 14″ trinitron monitor.
My Y/C cable is on the fritz as they get sometimes, can’t see the chroma. It looks a little cleaner but I can still see some “artifacting” around the text. I wouldn’t worry so much if this wasn’t going to be broadcast.
Have to master tomorrow so tic toc….

May 24, 2005 at 2:53 amIf you’re working in DV and your titles have high saturation (especialy red or blue) against a black or otherwise low saturation background, it WILL come out pixelated. That’s a weakness of the DV codec.
Some tips…
– always verify in the vectorscope that you are inside (and not even borderline) of safe limits
– try to use other colors than pure red or pure blue. For instance, using a orange-ish red instead of pure red can come up much smoother.
– a 2 pixel contour of a different color with some softeness can help to give you smooth edges when you need to use a pure red or pure blue fill. -

May 24, 2005 at 3:10 amThanks for the post Le Cyote, Super Genius! and all the other great folks who replied in my dire hour of need!
I’m finding from the Apple forum that DV just sucks for text and titles. None of the “even X/Y integer placement” tricks made a difference in the way the text looked.
disapointing to say the least. I never had this trouble working on a media100 dv machine (don’t have access to that anymore, that’s why I bought the G5 & FCP!!)
Client wants no blur, no outline or anything…..just my luck!
there is a bit of contrast white text @ 80% or so on a dark green background with lighting effects to give it a soft blur. That looks great, the text sucks. I think I just going to have to render uncompressed and go somewhere that can handle that with their capture card to dump it out to beta. Well, I get to pay someone 100.00 an hour now! Good thing they are only 3/30 second spots!
I’ll keep looking for info on this.
