For the most part I think you’re right, Gary. But, aside from my own systems I often have
to edit in other places on whatever they have. So, as much as I may hate what Apple has
done to a loyal customer base here, it’s in my best interest to learn X.

I’m not saying this to be a d*ck, and I mean that 110%, but a healthy portion of the work I’ve done over the past 5 or 6 years has been unscrewing FCP jobs in general.

I work in feature film post quite a lot and a bunch of independent producers, apparently not wanting to pay anything, have hired lots of unqualified editors who would cut for cheap. And then, when it comes time to make final deliveries, those same producers come squealing to an editor or post super who knows what they’re doing.

This in no way reflects on FCP 7’s capabilities, it reflects on short-sighted producers who hire editors without the experience to make deliverables, which is the technical side of editing and has nothing to do with telling the story.

It’s not rocket science, but there are definitely technical as well as aesthetic and creative aspects to editing. Apple didn’t help anybody by making FCP X so single-user centric.

Gary- “I doubt they ask for Final Cut Pro “X” specifically. They’ve probably just heard that “professional” editors use FCP, and will merely ask for that, not really thinking about what version of it you’ll be using, or what being able to work in FCPX vs FCP7 is any better/different.”

But the days of FCP being synonymous with “professionalism” are sadly coming to an end soon.

Even if they were to add pro i/o, multicam, audio editng tools and EVERYTHING else to X (which I don’t think will happen), the UI and project structure is just too out there for the majority of post houses and big shows. The architecture doesn’t seem built for a shared environment.

Even if you don’t agree with me, you have to admit that X is years away from being used in a high end market. And that’s a tough market to get into. I don’t know that Apple can do it again with this program… in any shape that it may take in the future.
