Geoff, thanks for posting that! It shows that FCP X can sync multiple clips. I have found the key is to wait for the background render bar to finish before opening up the sync’d clip.

Tom, many professional people are shooting with DSLRs including several feature films, television shows, and commercials. Pro color houses such as Technicolor have workflows designed around those very cameras, so I don’t think it’s right to say that they aren’t “professional”. Do other cameras have different features that might be helpful? Yes, but that doesn’t make the tool (or the videographer) any less “professional”.

I haven’t tried this exactly, but maybe PluralEyes will help you out (if you still have FCP 7). I know i’ve synced several video clips to a single audio file to that before.

    Couldn’t say it any better.

    Matt,

I do have FCP7. But I’m trying to migrate to FCPX. And one of the features I was most excited about was the “sync” which so far has been pretty disappointing.

    But I hope I’m just missing something….

“many professional people are shooting with DSLRs including several feature films, television shows, and commercials. ”

Indeed when the camera is festooned with matte boxes and add-ons and dual audio recording monitored through a mixer with the camera a lens with a sensor.

This is a not an appropriate camera for many uses.

I never said they weren’t professional. I just said that any professional looking for a video camera would exclude these because of the functionality they lack. The functionality can be added on, but then the cameras are not useful for operations other than controlled productions like narrative fiction, commercials, episodic television and such.

    All the best,

    Tom

One thing you might do is make sure audio levels are loud enough. When I had issues, I raised the audio level on one of the cameras and that did the trick.

Why don’t you synchronize the first video clip with the long audio clip? That will create a compound clip that you can then just open up and append the 4 other video clips to. If the video clips were broken up by the camera due to a time limit, then they should slide right in there in sync.

What do you mean when you say “append the other 4 clips to it”

It still has to be synced. When the camera shuts off due to a time limit, there is still a few seconds before it starts to re-record. So unfortunately you can’t just slide the clips in there without manually syncing, which is what I’m trying to avoid.

Obviously in this case, it’s no big deal and I’ll probably just end up doing it manual. But I’m looking in the future for other projects with hundreds of clips and dozens of audio tracks.

    Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I can get it to sync the clips individually just fine.

I’m just looking for kind of like a “batch” sync. Multiple, shorter video files to a longer audio track.

Like I said earlier, I haven’t had problems with clips from different cameras recording the same thing.

I’m looking for advice on syncing multiple, sequential clips from the same camera to one longer track of audio.

That is what I was doing. Changing the audio level achieved sync where lower level failed.

    Best,
    Geoff
