January 30, 2014 at 10:02 pmThat is because the HP doesn’t have the right GPU’s. That is simply Open CL. Nvidia cards don’t perform nearly as well with Open CL as they do Cuda as well. Take applications such as C4D, 3DSMax, Fusion, and GPU acceleration renderers like Octane or Vray and the HP will greatly outperform the nMPro just like Adobe.
Still waiting to see about Davinci though I suspect it will remain better with the Dual Xeon and Nvidia cards.

January 31, 2014 at 5:00 pmEditing will be the same on either platform – once your in the app there’s no functional advantage from one to the other. Depends too on your hardware budget – you can build a very fast all SSD PC for far less than buying ew Mac Pro’s but like others have said if your workflow involves Pro Res I’d stick with the Mac. PC will read and edit Pro Res fine but you can’t output a Pro Res file. Cineform and DNxHD are both great on the PC.

February 4, 2014 at 2:37 pmThere have been some excellent, highly technical replies to the OP. In case you want a response from a non-techie person, I just “voted” on this very issue by buying a MacBook Pro, for four reasons:
1. OSX works for me; I’m sure Windows 8.1 is great, but I have only so much time to spend on learning new software, and I’d rather spend that time on new After Effects techniques than operating system basics.
2. Our old Windows boxes are a PITA to keep running smoothly; our 1st-gen Intel Macs are still very useful and trouble-free. Having started on PCs, I have been delighted with the ease of use of OSX.
3. Most of the people I work with use Macs, so staying on that platform is just easier.
4. Cost is a non-issue, especially given the longevity of the Mac. I kept hearing how much more expensive the Macs are, compared to PCs. So when I priced out a workstation from HP, I was shocked to find that it wasn’t really that cheap. If you find otherwise, I’d be very interested to know, because we are also looking to get a new desktop this year.Good luck and let us know what you decide.

February 4, 2014 at 2:41 pmUpdate! The Z820 is pretty much the same price as a Mac Pro with the specs we wanted. We just got a budget approved for 6-core Mac Pros with 32 GB RAM. Both Windows and Mac have their own voodoo to deal with but we’ve been dealing with Mac voodoo for 15 years here so switching doesn’t make much sense for us! Thanks for all your input!!
