Wayne. I think that is my problem. I import the files directly from my camera to a hard drive, then import into FCP. So this means that I have to convert every file to prores422? Like through compression? I feel like such an idiot b/c i went to school for film but am by all means not an editor. I know there are better people out there for the job.

No, you have to import your media thru Log and Transfer. But before you do this, backup the entire contents of your SD cards first. Archive them to DVD or BluRay for later use, if needed.

You can use Compressor but you can import into Final Cut Pro using Log and Transfer and using this to convert to ProRes422.

But before you go too much further, I would suggest that you look at some tutorials on FCP here on the COW. You really need to be more familiar with the software.
