January 31, 2013 at 12:53 pmAre you using VP11 projects in VP12? I have found that editing older projects is not the same experience as starting a fresh project in Vegas Pro 12.0. It’s always best to finish projects in the version you started them in and only use Vegas Prop 12.0 for new projects.

February 2, 2013 at 6:48 pmHi John,
I believe that’s what I’ve been doing, grabbing a V11 or V9 project as a template (using predetermined title layouts, intro/outro, etc) to use in a V12 project… as a starting point.Again, if one can not confidently upconvert projects, Sony Vegas reveals yet another significant flaw.
Can you imagine keeping six versions of Vegas on a workstation, just in case one has to re-visit a past project and make modifications to it? or,
can you imagine if Microsoft would not correctly convert older Excel or Word documents in newer versions? I don’t think the market would be accepting it gracefully.I will try starting my next project in Vegas 12 to see if I have better stability. Thanks for the idea. I’ll report back.

All I’m saying is that I don’t do this and I don’t have any problems. People who seem to do this seem to be having all the problems. Coincidence? Perhaps.
[Gilles Gagnon] “Can you imagine keeping six versions of Vegas on a workstation, just in case one has to re-visit a past project and make modifications to it?”
No, what I’m suggesting is that people finish their projects in the version of Vegas that they started the project. This has nothing to do with Vegas. I would never start a project in any version of any software and then upgrade major versions of the software in the middle of the project.
For old projects that you may have to revisit that’s a different story. Making small changes to an old project and re-rendering is different that starting with a template made from an old project two versions ago and expecting everything to work smoothly going forward. I always finish my projects with the version I started them with and start new projects with a clean new version (not from any old template).
If you don’t think that projects get corrupt and contain bad data structures that cause Vegas to crash and then you keep copying that project to use with newer versions and wondering why your newer version keeps crashing, now you know why.
[Gilles Gagnon] “can you imagine if Microsoft would not correctly convert older Excel or Word documents in newer versions?”
I can not only imagine it, I’ve lived through it. Microsoft’s backward compatibility is a nightmare that I live every day at work where people with different versions are seeing different things and loosing things and then saving them and making them worse. This is why big corporations dictate the version of software you are allowed to use in the office and no one is allowed to upgrade until the entire corporation upgrades together.

You should see better results. Let us know.
