I agree… the only real show stopper for me was subclips. For me, there is no way around them. If you look at the thread from the Adobe forum, many people have come to the conclusion that their is a problem with subclips. All the other problems I had I was willing to deal with. I guess it was just too many problems all I once so I was frustrated.

I can understand that.

I’ll have to get a clip that long to mess around with the subclip issue.

Could you please post some specifics on your situation?

-What drive the clip is on
-How full is it?
-Defragged?
-How is it linked (FW, USB2, SCSI, Internal, RAID, etc.)
-Project settings?
-any difference in behavior if the subclip is from the beginning or end of the clip?
-anything else you think is important

I have three drives:
Drive 1 = 30 Gigs with only Windows XP SP2 + Applications (At the time I only had the production studio installed.) Connected to channel 1 on the MOBO
Drive 2 = 80 Gigs used as scratch disk (conformed audio, project files, preview files, etc.) Connected to channel 1 on a PCI ATA controller card
Drive 3 = 300 Gigs used for captured media only. Connected to Channel 2 on the MOBO

-How full is it?
All drives are less than 30% full.

-Defragged?
All drives are eide 7200 rpm drives that were formatted before the project.

-Project settings?
DV/Drop-Frame/29.97/720×480
-any difference in behavior if the subclip is from the beginning or end of the clip?
The problem appeared to be the same if the subclip was created from the begining of a master clip or the middle.
-anything else you think is important
When trying to play the subclip, the disk is being read but it just takes a long time before the clip will play. It almost seems as if PPRO is searching the entire master clip for the subclip section or trying to load the subclip section into ram. My first test with short subclips showed no problems, its only with larger subclips.

Select In and Out points in Source monitor
CTRL -P is the shortcut or use option from the clip menu.

There is also and option to edit subclips ( allowing one to extend the length of a subclip once it has been made. (handy)

Okay….drag the clip from the source window to the project window or hit CTRL-P, the results with subclips is the same.

I’m shooting all day today and won’t be able to test this until tomorrow at the earliest.

Is their someone with an hour master clip who could try to trim a 5 minute clip out of the middle, drop it on the timeline and note if you get a playback delay?

Just as a personal comment regarding all crash related issues.

It is “very” often due to the fact that the computer running premiere is also the “familly” computer.

If you are using Premiere at a Pro level, that should be one of the very, very few applications present and running on that computer. Even an antivirus can cause problems for very obvious reasons.

And yes, there are vey specific harware requirements. If you have ever used Avid’s products, you would think that Adobe is very loose on those requirements. For a while Avid even required you to buy their “own” computer system.

I have, as other mentioned, never experienced crashes, except with some old versions of Adobe Encore, which seem to be pretty much stable now.

I see you describe you HD system, why don’t you include the specs for your whole computer, processor, Mobo, chipset, video card, etc, from you current description of your HD system it seems like you have an older system which could be giving you performance problems.

I just got Adobr Premier 2, and I LOVE it!
In my opinion, Premiere is just getting better and better.
I’ve edited on many different platforms… Discreet 6.5, Premier 6 and Premier 1.5, and Final Cut Pro. Premier Pro 2 is by far the best of all these systems.
They’ve addressed issues I didn’t even know were issues.
I don’t know what your problems are, but speaking from my own experience, Premier Pro 2 is slickity!
