add 64.99 for another 1.5 TB drive
keep the small system drive and keep your work off of it.

add 94.99 for another 8 GB om Memory
change the video card to a GTX550.
I prefer ASUS (I chose the 460 because I have one, the 550 will do fine)
ASUS ENGTX550 TI DC TOP/DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi)
1GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
    Item#: N82E16814121434 $159.99 ($10 more)

This was not a quote. You order the parts from Newegg.com, you pay for them, you assemble the computer.
You can expect $15 to $25 for shipping, but no sales tax, at least in my state.
All this for around $1200. It smokes your other quote.
You can do it! This time next year you’ll be making computers for your friends.

Oh ok…gotcha! I think you’ve just convinced me to put together my workstation. I follow directions extremely well and I do feel confident in my abilities.

    THANKS!

(Once I purchase the components and have them up and running I will post pictures!)

Congrats and good luck with your system.

One more suggestion is to pick up a copy of Scott Mueller’s Upgrading and Repairing PCs (19th Edition). There is a DVD and chapter with pics showing you how to assemble a computer and how to troubleshoot any problems. You can pick up copy from Amazon (or elsewhere) for $30.

Just a point of clarification here… JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Discs) is a non-RAID configuration. So you’re correct about wanting level 5 RAID…that spreads redundancy across four (or more) identical drives, allowing one to fail with no data loss. JBOD systems can do drive spanning, to turn four smaller drives into one big-ass volume, but there’s no data redundancy.

    Hi Joshua
I recently built my first computer specifically for Vegas Video Editing.
I made a full two part video tutorial of the entire build, which is on YouTube now. So if you haven’t actually built your new computer yet, you may like to check out the video I made. Now that I have successfully done my first build, I am kicking myself that I didn’t have the courage to try this many years ago. Rendering video now is an absolute breeze.
Here is the link to my YT video:

    All the best.

Thanks Derek for the YT vids! I will be viewing those shortly! This will go great with the book Mike Thomas advised me to go purchase. I should be receiving my computer parts mid-next week and I will be on to building my computer shortly.

*A special thanks to Mike Thomas, Derek Moran, and everyone else who’s submitted advice; I’m trying to absorb everything suggested!*

    Here’s my setup:
