Something to do at NAB on Wednesday…

Perhaps someone there will have a 4G phone with unlimited data that you can tether to a laptop. I have unlimited data with my 4G phone (no dropping to 2 G after 20GB). I can use the Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle along with a DSLR camera to stream over Google Hangouts. I have been told the Intensity Shuttle works with most online streaming software but there are cheaper USB devices that would work as well. There is also free and inexpensive software that will let you use almost any DSLR cameras as a live webcam without the need for any extra USB devices. Most streaming software will see it as a webcam. The software worked with my DSLR cameras. It would probably be best to use 1280 X 720. The 4G might take a hit at NAB.

Yeap but it’s same problem- 100K+ folks hitting the same couple of cell towers and that’s above and beyond the normal Vegas casino crowds.

(Actually it will be great to see you – I’ll try hard to come up with at least one wildly unsupportable flight of FCP X-centric frippery to toss out in your honor!)
I also suggested that the organizers provide us with those awesome cheap rubber inflatable fake Sumo Wrestler suits and let the battle be decided in a taped off “octagon” live match, but they nixed the idea.

Yeah, there’s no practical wireless method anywhere in town that week, for anything. It’s one of those things you have to experience to really get. It really is like not having a phone at all for parts of the day. Doesn’t matter which provider or platform.
That said, it’s been 10 years since I’ve been (yikes!), but there used to be ethernet in the rooms there. Setting up a private network should be child’s play.
I dunno, I wouldn’t rule this out. I certainly understand not making it part of the marketing plan in case it doesn’t work (and I can easily imagine them losing the ethernet in an infrastructure upgrade since I was last there), but I don’t think a lot of people get just how incredibly easy this is now. It wasn’t like that even last year. It’s different now. I’d plan on bringing the kit, and be prepared to bail if you have to — but I think you might be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to set up and how well it works.
