November 21, 2012 at 2:43 pm[Tyler Kemp] “So you would suggest taking everything important off my laptop and starting over fresh?”
If you wanted to do that, here is what I would do. I would buy a 500GB/1TB USB drive and a program like Acronis TrueImage and backup your laptop to the external drive as it is today. If you use Acronis, make the Acronis Boot USB Stick. Other backup programs may have this option as well. This will give you the ability to do a ‘bare metal’ restore should anything go wrong. Then back up all of your important files to a folder on the external disk as well this way you can just drag and drop them back (it’s just easier and it will give you a second copy).
Now get the original restore DVD for your laptop (it may actually be on a separate partition) and restore your laptop back to the factory image. Then add Vegas Pro and all of your files and see if it works. If it all works, make a full backup at this point. Then add other programs back. If at any point Vegas stops working, you have a known working backup to go back to.
Finally, when you have everything installed and Vegas is still working. Make another full backup. This will be your safe copy. You can then run the backup software once a week to make an incremental backup (which will be smaller and faster). If you keep a rolling 4 to 6 incremental backups you should be able to go back 4 to 6 weeks should anything happen in the future.
BTW, I have my computer set up to do daily incremental backups of my C: drive to a folder on my D: drive. I keep 2 months of daily incremental backups so that I can go restore my computer to any day in the last 60 days. The backup runs each morning and only takes 10 – 15 minutes to run. This might be overkill for you but I run a business from my computer so I cannot afford any loss or down time.
