I agree very much with you about this Wayne.
I don’t understand why FC is so slow to export once everything is fully rendered.
Is supposed that just have to write the render files together, but gets so killing slow.

I have a new record for sluggishness!

I just exported an XDCAM HD sequence, checked Make Self Contained and left it to output overnight. This was a single 30 minute episode with bars, tone and slate. It also included commercials.

Time to output: 7 1/2 hours!

Under FCP 6.0.6, the same program would take about 40 minutes.

So…. With that… Someone at Apple has broken something. Its not the fault of Sony because the same drivers used under FCP 6.0.6 render in approximately 40 minutes.

By the way… Exporting to a reference file still takes about 2 1/2 hours instead of a few minutes.

This issue is really really bad with XDCAM HD but ProRes422, even though it renders terribly slow, does export faster… much faster. Let’s say about 25 minutes for the same program.

    Wayne,
Any rendering to a GOP based format will be more slow.
However the difference in time between the two system is difficult to understand.

Very true, Rafael. You’re absolutely right. That’s why we usually edit in DVCProHD, but… when time becomes very tight, we’ll import the XDCAM HD footage and edit from that, rendering to ProRes422.

I tried another experiment last night. I changed my render settings back to XDCAM HD and exported my programs to XDCAM HD. I used Batch Export to export two sequences that were edited in XDCAM HD. Both programs took 2 1/2 hours to export. This is compared to the program I exported the night before, one single timeline that was edited in ProRes422 and exported to XDCAM HD. if you remember, that render took 7 1/2 hours.

This will mess with your mind, won’t it?

I think that, some how, Batch Export skip all the FC pipeline. I mean, is just pure QT.
Why don’t you make same test with QT and QT Conversion?
If you find the time faster than in FC I would think of an issue here.
Had you have a look to the Activity Monitor during the exports?
